IE 8 problem [Error message on opening new tab]

I downloaded IE 8 or rather MS downloaded it for me as a priority update on both my computers which I do not believe it is. When I tried to open a new tab I got this error message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Debug Library

Debug Assertion Failed!
Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
File:\x1IEHook.cpp
Line: 240

Expression: ((HRESULT)(hr) >=0)

For information on how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on asserts.
(Press Retry to debug the application)

I pressed Retry and got this:

Error signature
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 8.0.6001.18702 ModName: popupblocker.dll
ModVer: 2.0.0.0 Offset: 00083cdd

To view technical information about the error report click here

Disabling popup blocker did not work. Anyone else have this problem?
Is this serious or just a nuisance?
Jack

popupblocker.dll is not a Windows file and not part of Internet Explorer 8. It is either associated with the software listed here or malware.

If you run IE with No Add-ons does the problem still occur?

(Right click Desktop icon > Start without Add-ons or Programs > Accessories > System Tools)
