Thanks Alice for your help in all this mess.

I have done searches for DirectX , dxdiag.exe & dxinfo.exe and can't find anything. Nothing shows up when I use start, run feature either. The link Alice gave to Microsoft's site said if nothing shows up I must have an earlier version and should upgrade to 8.1 so that is what I am doing. Thank you again for all of your help!

Now if we can just figure out our CD-ROM problem it will be like having a whole new computer all over again.

Blessings,
Amy

Hi Amy,

As long as you aren't running Windows 95 (and I don't see how you could be, if you installed IE6) you should be ok with DX8.1

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q179113"How to Download and Install DirectX" says that "DirectX 8.1 will not install on Microsoft Windows 95."

If you really want to see what DirectX version you have installed, (from my notes)

Do a 'Find" on the file ddhelp.exe.
Right-click the file icon (in the find window)
Select 'properties'
Click on the version tab. That will give you a version number, for example 4.04.00.0068, which is directX3 (DX3 and earlier are for Win95).

Here are the version numbers I've gathered along the way from different sources. They should be fairly accurate. If you show a version not listed, post back.

DirectX 1.0 - 4.02.0095
DirectX 2.0 - 4.03.00.1096
DirectX 3.0 - 4.04.00.0068
DirectX 5.0 - 4.05.00.0155
DirectX 5.2 - 4.05.01.1600
DirectX 5.2 - (in Windows 98 only) - 4.05.01.1998
DirectX 6.0 - 4.06.00.0318, with some components still showing DirectX 5.x numbers(one of which can be 4.05.00.0165)
DirectX 6.1 - 4.06.02.0436
DirectX 7.0 - 4.07.00.0700
NOTE: there was no DirectX4

By the way, DirectX 7.0a is still available for download at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...eleaseID=16819 in case you or anyone else would rather try that.

(Being ever pedantic, EDITED to note that DX3 and earlier are for Win95)

Again, thank you Alice for all of the information!

Your directions that time worked well! I have DirectX 5.2 - (in Windows 98 only) - 4.05.01.1998, which is about right since we have Windows 98.

Since I am already downloading 8.1b I will just go ahead and update 5.2 like Brett suggested. Thanks again for all of your help!

Amy

I'm having a very similar problem on W2kPro IE 6.0

Noticed it recently perhaps after I started loading up the restricted web site list in IE. Used to run the apopup killer & decide to just load the objectional URL's into the restricted zone list.

My prob is slightly different, as I have no problem opening a window, I can click to any link & keep going, until I want to close a page. THEN the whole stream of pages closes & IE restarts with a system event

details posted on this thread.

IE6 keeps terminating

I've run N2002, * on DSL get constant updates on virus def's & scan daily.

Sunday I repair IE, run adaware, disk cleanup & defrag. So I should be in good shape. BUT

restricted site list only contains 1 URL now

Don't know if it's a bad cookie or PLEASE HELP.

Apparently this is behavior is by design...so now I need to find out how to set the IE parms to show what kind of error may be occurring so I can avoid this.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q227992

This is particularly annoying as I am not trying to get to a new set of pages that I was trying to get to before this error occurred.

I also need to know how to determine what causes the restricted site icon to appear at the bottom of an IE page. for instance theat icon is on the bottom of this page now.
