As long as you aren't running Windows 95 (and I don't see how you could be, if you installed IE6) you should be ok with DX8.1 http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q179113
"How to Download and Install DirectX" says that "DirectX 8.1 will not install on Microsoft Windows 95."
If you really want to see what DirectX version you have installed, (from my notes)
Do a 'Find" on the file ddhelp.exe.
Right-click the file icon (in the find window)
Click on the version tab. That will give you a version number, for example 4.04.00.0068, which is directX3 (DX3 and earlier are for Win95).
Here are the version numbers I've gathered along the way from different sources. They should be fairly accurate. If you show a version not listed, post back.
DirectX 1.0 - 4.02.0095
DirectX 2.0 - 4.03.00.1096
DirectX 3.0 - 4.04.00.0068
DirectX 5.0 - 4.05.00.0155
DirectX 5.2 - 4.05.01.1600
DirectX 5.2 - (in Windows 98 only) - 4.05.01.1998
DirectX 6.0 - 4.06.00.0318, with some components still showing DirectX 5.x numbers(one of which can be 4.05.00.0165)
DirectX 6.1 - 4.06.02.0436
DirectX 7.0 - 4.07.00.0700
NOTE: there was no DirectX4
By the way, DirectX 7.0a is still available for download at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...eleaseID=16819
in case you or anyone else would rather try that.
(Being ever pedantic, EDITED to note that DX3 and earlier are for Win95)
