For the last two days while I am surfing the net the Internet Explorer will just close on me for no reason. I have to double click the icon on my desktop and start all over again. What is happening? Can anyone give me advice on what I should do and what could be causing this? I am a novice at computers. Thanks.

PS I use a cable modem, hisgh sped DSL if that matters but I have been using that for a year now and this problem jus started 2 days ago.

I have been wondering the same thing!

This same thing has been happening to me for the past month or so. A web site will open and then within a few seconds Internet Explorer will shut down and I have to go back to the desktop to open it again. I checked the 3 reasons Humbug gave and my Internet Explorer is still closing unexpectedly on some websites.

Humbug, what else could be happening?

Thank you for your time and help.

    Hi mykidzmamma
    Welcome to the boards!

Might want to give this a try?
Close IE, OE, and or outlook first
go to run and type in the following

    regsvr32 urlmon.dll

you should see a short message that the command was successful.

Reboot. Try your links now they should be working.

If not continue with these in the same manner

    regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 shdoc401.dll
    regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 urlmon.dll

    reboot.

Do you have some kind of pop up stopper installed that could be doing this?
    It's just one particular page?

No, nothing like that installed. It started with the weather.com site and now gymboree.com, jcpenney.com, geocities.com (or whatever the web address is for that now that they are with yahoo). Seems the problem is increasing and that is what has me worried. Thank you for your help.

Does this happen when you type an address into the Address Bar? When you open a new page via a link? Or via your Favourites?

Reboot and then empty the contents of both C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files and C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.

Check that you have the latest driver installed for your video card.

Go to Control Panel - System - Performance - Graphics, and
reduce the Hardware Acceleration a little.

EDIT: Just noticed your other post. Let's sort that one out before trying the above!

Okay, I have gotten rid of the w32.bedtrans virus, the hooker trojan virus and the kak worm virus. I uninstalled Internet Explorer 5, which automatically went back to IE 4. Seems IE 4 will open 3 of the 4 websites IE 5 would not. I downloaded IE 6 to see if it would work and it shut down the same web sites as IE 5 so now we are back to IE 4. Before uninstalling 6 I tried the repair, but it didn't seem to do anything.

Any ideas why one of the websites still will not open??

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

    Amy

PS~I tried what Brett said in the above post and it is still closing that one particular web site.

Good Grief! You WERE infected weren't you?
I take it you now scan virus free?
Ran the respective repair tools to fix the damages done to the registry?
You've downloaded all your Windows Critical updates?

Which particular website are you having troubles with?

Yes, I can't believe we had so many viruses! We have been online for 7 years now and never once a problem until now. Needless to say we now have Norton on the computer, whether hubby thinks we need it or not. :)

Yes, scan virus free. When I had downloaded and installed IE 6 and it didn't work I went to Microsoft's website and read what they had. They have a repair thread for the registry if IE is not working properly but it was for those who had the most recent Windows version. We have Windows 98 so that didn't help much. I should have looked to see if they have one for IE 5 before uninstalling but uninstalling IE 5 was kind of accident. Of course they have no Windows Critical Updates for IE 4 b/c it is so old, which is why I wanted to upgrade anyway.

The website I can't access (priestsforlife.org) is the one that was the first one to close down suddenly a couple of months ago.

    Thanks for your help!

    Amy

PS~Okay, this is weird! I turned off cookies on IE 4 and went to priestsforlife.org and it loaded perfectly! Is it possible for cookies to become corrupted?

... and this now happens every time that you try to load that site, but not on any other site? Does it only happen if you try to launch the page from your Favourites? Or does it also happen if you type the URL into the Address Bar?

About 4 different web sites would close suddenly when I typed the URL into the address bar or when I tried to launch the page from my Favorites. Now all web sites open perfectly with cookies disabled or only when cookies prompted when I type the URL in the Address Bar and when I launch the page from my favorites.

    Hopefully that makes sense?

    This has me baffled :(

That site contains no unusual code and doesn't even make use of cookies.

All I can suggest is that you try moving up to IE6 again.

Daizy, what exactly do you mean by Critical updates done?

    Thanks!
