IE 6--daughter windows open "scrolled up"

    P4 1.8/256/80Gb/WinXPH/IE6

Whenever I follow a link which opens a new IE window or choose "Open in new window" with either a right click or a shift/click, the daughter window opens "scrolled up "...just the title bar showing. This does not happen when I open a new instance of IE from the Quick Launch bar or the start menu. It's only happening with links.

    Here's what I've already tried:

    1. I cannot repair IE in Add/Remove programs because there is no entry for it on the programs list.

    2. I've looked at the sysoc.inf file and cannot find anything indicating IE6 should be hidden from the Add/Remove programs list.

    3. I cannot reinstall IE because a reinstall of IE on XP is not allowed... "this is by design" according the MS's Knowlege Base article Q256986 .

    4. I cannot change the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components as Q256986 tells me to because the entry does not exist.

If someone more registry-skilled than I thinks creating that entry might allow me to reinstall IE and fix its various little problems and if that someone could give me precise instructions how to create it (I'm fairly comfortable in the registry but creating this entry is beyond my present abilities) I would be grateful.

Are you able to alter the size of the "daughter" window by dragging? If so, open a "daughter" window, drag it to the size that you want, close the "mummy" window, close the "daughter" window and you should (fingers crossed!) find that the window sizes "stick ".

Excellent work, Brett! That did the trick. I've been using IE with it in the "reduced sized" mode with the window stretched to full screen so daughter windows would also open full screen.

Apparently at some point, I had a daughter screen rolled up, close the original window, then the daughter window and IE, the ever-faithful rememberer of things you don't want it to remember, never forgot.

Rats! I don't get to muck about in the registry, ***** something up and find out if XP's restore thingy really works, huh? What a shame.

    Thanks!

Edit: Hmmm...the asterisks are not for an obscene word. I used that tried-and-true British term for cleaning out horse stalls. Similiar to the f word, only it starts with an m.

Miz - you could always go into the registry and just delete a bunch of random keys. The HKCU section should do nicely as a playground and the Microsoft section is where I'd concentrate.

Then you will for sure find out about restore points. :D

Play around in HKCU? But...but....wouldn't it be easier just to delete my user info under Documents and Settings? Hey, I just found a whole folder of things that don't do anything when I click on them. It's called "Windows." It's taking up a lot of space, too, and you know I really need to save space on an 80-gig harddrive. Why, I might want to steal....errrr, download a movie someday through a file-sharing program. Kazaa is the right program to get, isn't it? I heard it has a whole bunch of really neat features like Gator! Oh, by the way, know where I can get Bonzai Buddy?

Speaking of saving space, I decided to get rid of my anti-virus software. It just takes up space, too, and sometimes it bugs me about "updating." Updating? Why should I have to do that? I downloaded their free program like they wanted me to and now they want me to UPDATE? Geeeze.

Then there's Zone Alarm. It kept telling me it blocked access to my computer. I don't want people blocked! Why, it might hurt their feelings and they might not try again so I had to get rid of Zone Alarm.

    :D :D :D
