    Hello everyone,
I am looking for a way to block all URLs except a few.
The goal is to allow our users to visit only the websites we want.
In fact, people asks for the contrary, in general.
So I am looking for a free way, of course, by tweaking IE, or the hosts file, or by using a software. Whatever...
Your help would be much appreciated.
    :)

I don't see how you can use just the hosts file to do this. If you only want them to access a few sites it would be an impossible task to block all of the rest using the hosts file.

I'm not really sure how you go about this. Maybe put those that you want them to be able to access into the hosts file along with their correct addresses and then somehow block your DNS servers with your firewall or router. Something along those lines anyway. With no access to DNS servers there would be no way to resolve a domain's address except for the hosts file. So, those that are in the hosts file would work, those that weren't in it would fail. Well, that's my theory anyway. :D I really don't know if blocking your DNS servers would cause you some other problems or not or if this would even work. I only mention it in case somebody else that knows might be able to comment on whether this or something similar is feasible or not.

This is a bit dated but have a feeling it'll work:

How to Configure Internet Explorer 5.x to Block Access to All But Approved Internet Sites

    SUMMARY
The following describes how to setup Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x so that no sites can be viewed, except those that are explicitly allowed by an Administrator. This is done through the Content Advisor system within Internet Explorer itself. To do this you must not be using Content Advisor or any 3rd Party Content Advisor application that interfaces directly into Internet Explorer.

NOTE: Content Advisor settings apply to all users on the local computer and cannot be changed by users who are not administrators on the local computer (Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 only). You cannot create different Content Advisor settings for different users on the same computer.

    thanks to all of you

    Hello all,
so thanks a lot to everyone.
You got it Steeve. With the IE content advisor, I fixed my problem.
    It works like a charm.
I should know that option for a long time (shame on me, boooooo.....) but in fact, I never use IE, since its first version, except at the office.
So, again, thanks for all your answers.
    This forum rocks!:)

    Already fixed

    Hello all,
    so thank you Gareth.
The IE content advisor fixed my need.
I just realized that I didn't know IE at all because I just don't want to use it, and this, since the version win95b version, so since its beginning.
    Guess why...
