To the extent that a disk write has been perfomed, in the target directory. There is no staging directory.

Bill, are you sure about that? When my system gets bogged down, I can see all downloads in the browser's cache and as far as I can tell, that's a disk write.

ok, for an example Firefox creates a .part file in the same directory as the intended destination directory of the file.

    does IE do anything similar??

If you are talking about any user initiated download from any web site, if IE7 works in the same way as IE6, downloads go temporarily into one of the subfolders in

    C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\

and from there they are copied into your chosen destination folder. I believe they are deleted from the temporary location after being copied to the destination.

When you in Windows Explorer navigate to these folders, you won't get any longer than

    C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

and to trick WE to reveal the subfolders, in folder settings, you must show hidden files and folders and you have to type in "Content.IE5" in the address field (after what's already there) > click "Go to ". If you try to open one of the subfolders, you will probably get a security warning.

If you are talking about updates which are downloaded and installed from Automatic Windows Update, they go into a temporarily created folder which gets deleted when the updates have been installed. If those are the ones you are trying to catch, there are easier ways.
