    Hi all

Sometimes when I boot windows ME then start Internet Explorer 5.5 my computer automatically goes to the Microsoft Windows Update page instead of Google which is my usual start page. Where can I find the command or applet that makes IE do that and disable it.

    Thanks in advance.

Were you by any chance on the update page before the reboot?

Do you have the updates set to auto download and install?

    Thanks,

I never said anything about rebooting it is always on boot up. About once a month. I have everything I can find on windows update disabled or uninstalled, but still it goes there every once in a while.

Random issue like this are real tuff to solve. You could spend a few days trying different things and not know for sure till "every once in a while" comes back around.

Updates are generally available on the second Tuesday of the month. Might keep an eye on next Tuesday the 14th and see if it happens then.

It sure is a puzzle to me, I guess I can live with it Ok but it irks me none the less, I don't want Microsoft telling my computer what to do. I am the captain of that ship not them.

desertbluesman--The usual place to set the home page is IE Tools|Internet Options|General tab. What address appears in the Home Page line now?
Any reason you have not updated to IE6?
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx
It is more secure. Installing it might also cure the above problem, if it still exists.
Also check how Windows Update is setup to inform you about Updates. From http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/archive/l0812/15l12/15l12.asp
"If you use WinMe, you also can set up an automated process to notify you when updates are available. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, and select the Automatic Updates icon. Choose the desired setting by selecting the appropriate radio button (and if you don't want automatic updates, select the radio button next to Turn Off Automatic Updating). Click OK. "

There are no more new Updates for WinMe available from Windows Update. All you can get are those which existed before support ended. (But perhaps there could be some for IE6.)

I find it distracting as well.

Another setting you may want to "turn off ":
Internet Explorer -> Tools menu -> Internet Options -> Advanced tab -> under Browsing -> "Automatically check for Internet Explorer updates "

mattman--I never ran WinME. Does it have an Advanced tab in Internet Options, and is that setting there?
Note I already mentioned one way in ME to disable auto Updates in my earlier post.
