    :confused: We are running Windows 98 and recently started having problems opening some Windows Media Files (WMV). What we can't figure out is why some files with this same file extension work and some don't. These files are not new and have played on my computer previously. The files are not corrupt, if I email them to someone else orto my laptop, they play just fine.

    We tried downloading various fixes including quicktime and codec and changing our IE security settings, but nothing has provided a fix yet.

    We figured there was a glitch, so we reformatted and reinstalled everything, but we are still having the same problem.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Welcome to windowsbbs!

    Have you worked through these Microsoft troubleshooters?
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=842186
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230687

    Then download and apply:
    http://www.download.com/3000-2139_4-10062728.html

    Finally,
    Click Start, and then click Run.
    In the Open box, type sysedit (without quotation marks), and then click OK.
    On the Window menu, click System.ini.
    In the [drivers32] section of the System.ini file, add the following line:

    VIDC.IV41=ir41_32.ax
    On the File menu, click Save.
    On the File menu, click Exit.
    Restart your computer.

    If files by the same extension can play, the problematic files are corrupt. This conclusion should have been reached by working through the troubleshooters above.
