Where are my Outlook Express files stored.

Hi,
I need to transfer my Outlook Express files, my emails, to a CD. Where they stored? Will it be easy to transfer them. My hard drive is on it's last legs.
I am using win98se.
Thanks.

lewislewis--What version of OE are you using? If v6.0, perhaps this will help
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670/

Do you have software to burn to a CD?

Oe 6

Hi Welshjim & Steve,
Thanks
I have saved my email files on a CD.
I have transferred them to
C:\WINDOWS.000\Application Data\Identities\{FEF6B4E0-4AA2-11DB-9163-D725DDF6EB5E}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
where the OE files seem to be stored.

I notice the windows folder is windows.000, I have never seen this before.
Well the folder has all the .dbx files but they are not showing in OE. What can I do?

lewislewis--You will not be able to read the .dbx files on the CD. They should be readable when you Import them to another OE program according to the instructions for Import in the reference I provided.
Be sure the CD folder containing the burned files is not marked "Read Only". Otherwise you may not be able to Import.

P.S. .dbx files can be read only by OE itself or by third party programs such as DBXtract.

files not appearing

Hi,
I saved all the files in the folder mentioned above. I have created a new folder in Outlook Express and it has showed up is the aforementioned folder.
When I open OE none of the .dbx folders/files that I copied into the folder show in OE, but the ones I have created are in the folder and show up in OE.
Is there any way to open a .dbx file manualy.
Thanks
Lewis

You can't just put the dbx files in OE's store folder and expect them to show up in OE. You need to import them. If that doesn't work, you should be able to get them to show up in OE by doing this. First, move the dbx files that you are trying to get into OE out of OE's store folder. Then, open OE and create new folders with the same names of the folders you're trying to get at. Close OE when you're done and then, in OE's store folder, delete the dbx files that were created when you made the folders in OE. Now copy the dbx files you moved out of the store folder back into the store folder. Next, open OE and the folders you're trying to get at should be available.

One more thought here. You say you burned these to a CD and then copied them to the hard drive. Check each of the dbx file's properties and make sure they don't have the read only attribute. To do this, right click on them, choose properties and on the general tab make sure read only isn't checked (at the bottom of the window). If they have the read only attribute you won't be able import them. My work around will probably still work but more then likely you'd get an error of some type if you tried to add emails too them or delete emails from them in OE.

Windows Setup searches your hard disk for a valid Windows folder to upgrade. If Setup finds a Windows folder with missing or damaged files, it defaults to installing Windows in the Windows.000 folder.

When you are prompted to install Windows in the Windows.000 folder, click Other Directory, and then type the name of the folder you want to use (such as Windows).

Hi,
I have got a new HD and I have been able to transfer my emails from the CD I burned. I had to uncheck the 'read only' and it has worked.
Thanks for all the help.
