I received a PM from Johannson. The problem is not quite the same. Johannson compressed the OE mail files and in the process may have lost them. I have suggested the problem be the subject of a new thread.
Most of the time a compression should do just that, compress the files and eliminate some free space. The files should not be lost, but might take a little longer to open. I am not aware that compression puts the files anywhere else than the usual Store Folder.
However, if doing a search for *.dbx finds that the files truly are gone (and sometimes that can happen with a compression, especially if the connection to the internet is not closed) then the Restoration program described should be used.
If, however, .dbx files are found, this free program http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fi...-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/download.html#
or for $5 the latest version with some explanation
    http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
can be used to open them to see if they are missing files or perhaps only newer email files generated since the compression.
So, to Johannson, if you find the .dbx files and they are the ones you want (using DBXtract), please start a new thread in which methods of putting those files back into OE can be offered.

This link may help explain a little more about compression.

Johansson-- I understand you have a bunch of loose .dbx files. But the email messages they contain do not exhibit in OE, correct? Do the names of these .dbx files correspond to the usual OE file names, like Inbox, Sent Items, etc?
    Download this program
    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fi...-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/download.html#
and use it to read the contents of the .dbx files. Do you see the messages you want to recover?

If yes, in OE, click on the word Inbox at the left near the top of the OE screen, just under the Toolbars. Do you see a list of the OE boxes (like Inbox, Sent Items, etc.)? (If you see only Local Folders, does it have a + to the left? If so, click on the +. Do you now see the list of other folders?)
    Depending on the answer:
    1) If Yes, click OE Tools|Options|Maintenance tab|Store Folder. Copy the address of the Store Folder and navigate to the Store Folder in Windows. If you find files named Inbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, etc, in the Store Folder, replace the ones in the Store Folder with the .dbx files you have found. Do not replace the Folders.dbx file already in Store Folder, but rather Delete it. Now reboot.
With luck that will restore the messages to OE.
    2) If No, right click on Local Folders (in the OE window as mentioned above), click on New Folders and one by one create the usual OE folders--Inbox, Sent Items, Outbox, Deleted Items and Drafts. Now go back up to 1) and follow the procedure there.

Johansson--Just curious if you were able to recover those OE files.
