    I recently backed-up my "Identities" directory before reistalling Windows 98. When I tried to replace "Identities" with the back-up version I rec'd a dll error. So then I tried to just replace the directory with the long set of numbers for the name. (283FC960-62...etc.) The old diretory had a different set of numbers, (2D7578C0-6E75...etc.) so I renamed the old one to the new name. That didn't work. I tried to copy the contents from the old folder (Outlook Express) to the new one. That didn't work either. Does anyone have the answer to this?

    Please Help
    Lee

    Thanks for the info. jmatt. I did actually visit the tomsterdam website already in one of my searches. The Microsoft info. page was helpful to some degree. I will know what to do next time I want to back-up my emails. But in the meantime I'm still at a loss on how to get my emails back on the system. I have them backed up on CD-R. There has to be a way to get them back on the system. I can look at them using wordpad. Does it have something to do with the registry? I don't know. I'm going to contact a friend of mine and see what he says.

    Thanks,
    Lee

    historyjensen A lot depends on whether you copied the subdirectories of the Identities folder as well.

    Normally the complete default path to the mailbox files is like this; C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{F5E8C6ED-5C9D-42F8-B75D-74BA69886CF0}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

    Having determined that you have that complete path backed up then do the following;

    Open Outlook Express, go to File > Import > Messages . Select Microsoft Outlook Express 5. (or your version) Click Next.
    Then select "import from a OE5 Store Directory ". Click OK, then browse to the folder you created for backup, click next, the rest is up to you which folders you wish to import. Take them all if you have any doubts.

    This will not wipe out your existing messages in the new mailbox. It will merge the saved backups with your existing.

    Good luck.
