GMACDUCK - Welcome to the Board

Sorry to drop on you heavily on your first post here, but ......

Please post in the appropriate forum - and describe your problem clearly and succinctly. Otherwise it may be difficult to interpret your problem and assist.

You have a problem with Internet Explorer? I have split your post to a new thread in the Internet Explorer/Outlook Express forum with title edit. Your problem has nothing to do with 'Icons rearranging themselves'.

Please observe Posting Rules #3 - Meaningful Subject - thread titles are used for archiving and should be a précis of the problem - look around the Board.

sorry for poting here , but i could not assertain how to start a new thread . as for the buttons ( back/forward) they work rather well. the problem is when i click on a link to any other site i am stuck at that site ( or i can click on another link to leave) What I cannot do is close that window as it is the only window i have , because i am only able to open 1 window not 2 ,3,4 or more but 1.as soon as i go to a new site the window i was using is overlaped by the new 1. so if i wish to go back i have to start over again.

GMACDUCK--What versions of Internet Explorer and Windows are you using?
Are you saying that if you right click on a link to a new site, then Open in New Window, you do not open a second IE window?

Those two statements seem contradictory. Can you elaborate?
In IE Tools|Internet Options|Advanced tab|Browsing section is the box "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" checked? Perhaps uncheck it. Then Apply|OK.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=241911
There is also a Registry edit to accomplish this, but perhaps best not to meddle with the Registry unless you are comfortable with it.

P.S. I have never been sure whether checking or unchecking "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" is the right way to cure the problem. Sometimes what works is to just to change whatever check or no-check situation that you presently have.

What happens when you click on Quicklinks in my signature? Does another page open and do you see that page in the Taskbar alongside this page (screenshot) and if so, can you return to this page by clicking on the page in the Taskbar?

WELL i TRIED UNCHECKING IT AND MET WITH THE SAME ISSUE. as for the ver. that I am using they are ie-6.0 and xp. I have all of the latest updates and I have checked for syp/mal ware with both spybot and microsoft. have found none.I tried the link on you sig. an was still left unable to go back . I have to go to the bbs home page and find this thread all over again after i click on any link.I have tried going to the tools sec. and using default selections but to no avail. This is a rough outline of what i do - I open ie and it goes to my home page from there i click on a any link and am redirected however the only window present is the one that i am using. there are no other windows in the task bar present, nor any behind the existing window.so if i wish to go to the previouse page i have to either typ in the address to my home page or go to fav. list for it , as the window it was in has been taken over bye the latest page. the " back" button is left as though it were a new page, and no other had been there before it.

The first stage in a Repair of Internet Explorer is to run System File Checker - I suggest you do this ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow - note the space before the / and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, were replaced look in Event Viewer.

GMACDUCK--Next thing you could try is a System Restore to a date prior to this starting.

If you're saying your back and forward buttons are always greyed out, there's a policy restriction that can cause this. Open regedit and go to the following key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions

Look in the right pane for an entry named NoNavButtons. If it's there, and the data value is anything other than zero, either delete the entry all together (my preference) or change the data value to zero. You have to close all IE windows for the change to take effect.

If you right click on a link in a web page > Open in New Window does the page open in a new window?

If it does not check out ....

You cannot open a new Internet Explorer window or nothing occurs after you click a link
