If I change the setting on how many days to keep history of web pages visited to 1 or 10 or anything else besides 20, the next time I look in in internet options, it resets itself back to 20, which is the default setting, I guess.

Is there a way to fix this? thanks

shortgal10--Have you told us what version of Windows and IE you are using?
Not sure if this will help, and it involves changing your Registry, so you want to be sure to back up the Registry or at least the key before making changes.
In WinXP, the number of days your History is kept is dictated by the following key in the Registry.
HK_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Setings\URL History\DaysToKeep. The number shown in parentheses in the Data column should be the number of days you want.
If you want further info on how to change please post.
