IE freezes when trying to browse to a file

I'm running IE 6.0 sp1 on XP home sp1 and have recently encountered a problem. When going to a webpage with a form and clicking the browse button on the form to select a file to upload I get the normal display of a partition on my hard drive.

However if I try to change partitions to select a file elsewhere on my drive IE never gets there and I have to kill the app.

This is not an issue with Firefox 1.0, so I suspect it's not my app. Which is under development on my office network and not accessible to the public.

Have very recently gotten rid of a nasty bot from my workstation and wonder if this could be related. Is it possible for me to foa try to uninstall/reinstall IE and see if that fixes it?

FWIW windows explorer is not having this sort of problem at all.

This KB article describes how to Repair or Reinstall IE 6 in XP. The first step - which often solves the problem - is to run System File Checker.

Start > Run > sfc /scannow and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, have been replaced look in Event Viewer.

On the other hand the problem could lie in your IE security settings - bit of a long shot I guess.

Thanks Pete, I can't do this until I replace my defunct cdrw... so much for Dell's bottom of the line desktop 'quality'.

Anyway turns out it works since rebooting; sorry I should've tried that first before even posting.

A possibly related problem I get is that Eudora will freeze after I click a link on an email. Which also stops happening after a reboot.

HijackThis is currently showing me nothing of concern, and I very recently did a clean os reinstall (before my cdrw totally went on me).

Hi Marty

If in doubt - reboot it can fix a multitude of problems and should be the first port of call in troubleshooting.

Never used Eudora - if that problem continues post a new thread in the Other Internet Software forum.
