    Ok, the problem began a few months ago, when, due to a virus or adware called "midaddle ", I manually deleted some files on the computer. This caused IE to stop executing javascript commands. If I click on a link that says, for example, "javascript: forward()" or "javascript: popup() ", nothing would happen. I enabled javascript in the "tools "-> "Internet Options "-> "Security "-> "Custom level ", but it still does not work. I tried editing the registry, but that didn't work either.

    I installed Netscape, and it ran javascript commands just fine. So I've been using both Netscape and IE for several months now. The other problem is, I created a website using Verizon's sitebuilder, but I cannot edit the site because it requires javascript. I tried using Netscape, but (after clicking "edit" and clicking the site I wanted to edit) when the window opened up, there was only a bunch of code instead of my website.

    I've had many people suggest solutions, and I've tried to work all of them, but nothing has worked. One person said that I was *******, since I had manually deleted files from c->windows->temp, c->program files->common files, and c->windows->system (or system32).
    I think that the solution lies in finding out which files are used when IE executes a javascript command link, and then checking to see if all of these files exist on my computer. The one(s) that do not exist on my computer are the ones that I need to replace in order to solve the problem. If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it. :)

    Hello Hartwendy,

    You're not specifying what OS.

    If 9X, have you tried a repair of IE? Access is in the Add/Remove applet.

    If XP, two repairs to try:

    Start > Run > cmd sfc /scannow and have your XP install disc handy. There is a space between sfc and /

    sfc - system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

    If you want to see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.

    The second and more serious: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Repair of the XP installation.

    In both cases have to have the XP cd.

    Regards - Charles

    Hartwendy--I may be wrong, but I think Netscape installs javascript. Whereas IE is more comfortable with MS Jscript.
    In any event you have nothing to lose by installing jscript
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp
    P.S. You should be very confident you are doing the right thing before deleting files from C:\Windows\System32. Nothing wrong with deleting Temp files, however. That is is one of the things that DiskCleanup (My Computer|right click on C:\|Properties|Tools) does.

    The problem persists.

    Charles, I use Windows XP Home. I tried out the system file checker, but it doesn't seem to have worked. The second method you recommended, the XP repair install, is a bit too risky at this point, because I have a lot of important files on this computer. I used the "Compaq Operating System CD" that came with my computer, and I'm assuming that's the correct CD to which you were referring.

    Jim, I tried installing JScript by downloading and installing "Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 (Windows 2000, XP) ". Supposedly, this file contains JScript version 5.6, as well as other scripting components. Well, it didn't work for me. Oh, and the temp folder.. yeah, I also thought it was okay to delete files from that folder, but after I had the problem and was talking to someone about it, and I told the person about deleting files from that folder, that person said something like, "You deleted files from the temp folder? Man, you're dead ". He works with computers often, so I do not doubt his computer handling abilities. I don't think he misunderstood me, since he repeated "temp folder" in his answer. He probably was thinking of another folder or something.

    Thanks to both you guys for trying to help me out. I greatly appreciate it! :D

    PS. I noticed that one of the words I typed on the original message was blocked out. The word means something like, being in a situation with no hope. It's not as severe as the f- or s-word, or any of the other bad words. I'm sorry if that caused hardships in understanding that sentence, and I'll try to be more careful with the words I use. :eek:

    Hi HartWendy,

    From that, I assume that you don't backup files. You should, because of either this kind of problem or Hardware failure. You don't have a CD writer?

    I used the "Compaq Operating System CD" that came with my computer, and I'm assuminig that's the correct CD to which you were referring.
    Yes, it does sound like it is. Don't know about Compags, but HP normally doesn't ship with one - instead they provide a factory restoration CD which can't be used in this manner. To make sure, either "explore" your CD to find out whether it's the OS alone or try booting with it. Worth finding out, you're going to need it sooner or later.

    Hartwendy --I understand that your problem is only seeing javascript content and that the PC otherwise runs fine. I also understand that you were able to download and install jscript from MS, but it did not fix the problem. (Did you reboot?)
    Have a look in IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab|Custom Level|scroll to Scripting section at bottom. Are the settings at Enable?

    Charles,

    I usually don't backup files, because there's too many and they're too big in size. I do have a CD writer, but I don't have that many CD-Rs. I can't find time nowadays to buy a few more, so I'm going to have to sit tight. System Restore doesn't work anymore, and I'm guessing it has to do with some javascript problem like the IE javascript problem. When I run it, the window comes up but it remains blank, completely white. I'm mentioning this just in case it might be helpful.
    I don't want to completely delete everything and reboot, since the computer works fine except for this javascript problem. I don't want to have to use up several CD-Rs just to reset my computer because of a small problem.
    But when I finally do get some more CD-Rs, and I'm able to back up everything I need, I'll be sure to try the Repair method you suggested.

    Jim,

    I did reboot but it did not solve the problem. As for the "Tools, Internet Options, Security... ", I looked there already, as I've mentioned in the very first post. The settings are at 'enable'.

    Thanks you guys for the additional help! If there is anything else anyone can suggest, please do so! :)

    How about RW's for backups?

    I've been cycling thru the same 4 RW's for something like 2 years.

    Establish a backup folder. To that backup folder copy the files that you want to backup and burn that folder out. Don't delete that backup folder on the HD, and on the next backup cycle, delete the "older" files in that folder and again backup, and so on. That's the cycle. I do that on a weekly basis. Each time I backup newer copies to the HD folder, it gets burned out. End up with 4 RW's, the oldest a month old. Then, cycle thru them, using the oldest. I end up with backups a month old. A method such as this is called a grandfather cycle, in this case, it's a great grandfather cycle.

    Charlesvar, I do have CD-RWs, but not enough (even when combined with the CD-Rs) to back up all of my files. I have been using this computer for many years, and I have many files saved on it. Thanks for the grandfather cycle method. I've never really used my CD-RWs because I didn't know how to delete the files contained within them. But then I found out that Ashampoo CD Recording Suite 4, which I use, has an option to erase CD-RWs. So this cycle will come in handy in the future.

    The problem persists. I was wondering, is there a way to directly access the javascript through the URL? This is the site I'm stuck on,

    http://sitebuilder.verizon.net/trellix/sitebuilder/f_all_my_sites.html

    and the javascript I need to run is javascript:OpenSite('49349337717743228').
    If I can somehow access this somehow (Maybe copying that long number and pasting it somewhere.. or something) then I'm thinking I might be able to start editing my site again.

    As I've mentioned before, when I run this Javascript on Netscape, I get my website in code, not as I would regularly see a website. I would see things like

    <html>
    <HEAD>
    <meta http-equiv= "Content-Type" content= "text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 ">

    <META http-equiv= "Content-Type" content= "text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 ">

    and I cannot edit this at all. Oh, and btw.. I went to this site http://ww2.chandler.k12.az.us/help.html
    and I ran the javascript test, and the message came up "JavaScript is working correctly." which means that Javascript should be working. I'm completely lost now. I should be getting no message at all, and yet I am getting a Javascript message. I have run out of suggestions. Please help. Thanks again.

    Hello Hartwendy,

    I can't get anything to show in that site. Someone else should try.

    Did the following:

    Sarted out Blocking java script
    scripts (vsbscript)
    embedded objects (java, ActiveX)
    And shut them off one by one hoping to isolate which of the above was the cause. Got to unblocking all of them - still no joy.

    Then put your site into the trusted zone, bypassing IE's restrictions and shutting ZAP, my 3rd party firewall off, leaving XP's WF on, still doesn't work. So pending someone trying the site, I would say there is something wrong with the site itself.

    One more factoid: I run two copies of XP, on the other one, I get 404 not found error.

    About backing up, two ways to go:

    One would be a DVD burner - stores more than 4 gigs of data.

    Another would be a second hard drive - simply copy files to a backup folder there and is cheaper, I just bought a 40 gig drive for less than $50.00

    Regards - Charles

    EDIT: For anyone looking at this thread, on the subject of cd burning/erasing: XP has a built in CD burner and can erase Rw's. Enter Burn into the Help and Support applet on the Start menu. Same with Erase, info on how to erase RW cd's.

    Hi Jim,

    works fine for me Ok, waiting for someone to tell me that.

    Then it is a IE config issue - if I figure out what that is, then that may be Hartwendy's problem.

    Welshjim, I haven't run Windows update recently. I am using XP Home SP2, because I updated to it before the problem began. I can't run Windows update, because I need to access a javascript command at one point in the update process. I can't use Netscape because it says that I need to run Windows update on IE. Oh, and the site works fine for me as well. I'm guessing that Charlesvar is referring to the Verizon site. Hmm.. I'm not sure if Windows Update will solve the problem, because it probably won't replace missing system files. I was wondering, does IE have its own javascript executer like Netscape? Or does it rely on the system's javascript executer?

    Charlesvar, the site, if you're referring to http://ww2.chandler.k12.az.us/help.html, works fine for me as well. It says at the top, "Problems using our website?" and there is another heading a few lines down called "JavaScript Test ", which I had hoped meant that it would test whether Javascript worked on the browser being used. I tested it on IE, and the message came up on the little box, saying "JavaScript is working correctly. "... which got me confused.

    If you're referring to the Verizon SiteBuilder site, well, yes, I get the same thing (Page cannot be found). I don't get the message when I log on though, and access it through Verizon (and not going directly to the URL). So you don't have to worry about that site. The page cannot be found probably because one needs to log in first, and activate that site. On the page, it shows the websites that one has created. If one clicks on one of the websites, one is taken to a page where one can edit that website.

    Eh... hopefully, that made some sense. Basically, don't worry about that site not showing up. If you were to create and access your account on the Verizon site, and then make a site, and go to "My Webspace" and click on "Edit my sites ", then you would be taken to that page and everything would show up.

    I'm just mentioning that that is the site where I am stuck on because, when I log on and access that site through Verizon, and when the page shows, the link to access the editing of my site is a javascript link. I click on it, and nothing happens. I need to access the site that will open when I click on the link.
    I'm also mentioning the site because I was wondering if anyone knew of any other way to go to the editing of my site directly. Maybe I could copy that long number and paste it somewhere in the URL, or something.

    Thanks again to both you guys, and hopefully we'll be able to fix the problem soon.
