Cookies in IE

From MS I had to read that three times.

Then I found this:

Notes:
1. Cookies that have a compact privacy policy which specifies that personally identifiable information is used with your consent are always accepted, unless you set the slider to Block All.
2. Changing your privacy preferences does not affect the cookie acceptance policy for cookies that have already been set unless you move the slider to Accept All Cookies or Block All Cookies.
Definitions:
Pre-existing cookies: cookies that were already on your computer before you installed IE 6.
Leashed cookies: restricted so that they can only be sent on requests to download first-party content.
Downgraded cookies: persistent cookies that have been downgraded to session cookies.

Maybe this should be a sticky?

Neither can I.

=========================================================

I do not understand why there is so much concern over 'Cookies' anyway.

Just follow the guide lines for setting up and tweaking Internet Explorer 6 here:
http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/ie6/

'Privacy' settings for IE6 are explained and pictured here:
http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/ie6/ie-3.shtml

And, to print the IE6 Tweak guide, go here:
http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/ie6/print.shtml

After you have finished reading and/or tweaking IE6, download and install Javacool's SpywareBlaster 3.1
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

And, your cookie problems are over. Ad-Aware or any other spyware scanner will seldom, if ever, find another 'bad' cookie on your HDD.

Just my opinion,

You can get a free pdf reader from Adobe here.
The thumbnail is just a handy chart of each privacy setting of IE.

This means that IE will not block cookies from sites that it considers to have "grandfather" rights. MS calls them "legacy" sites. So you can get cookies, including tracking cookies, from these sites regardless of your Privacy settings.
Of course spyware detectors will find them, but you will get them.

That is NOT true! At least it isn't in my case.

In my IE6 options under the 'Privacy' tab, I override the slider by going to the 'Advanced' button and checking the 'Override automatic cookie handling' box. Under 'First-party Cookies', I have ticked the 'Accept' box. Under 'Third-party Coolies', I have ticked the 'Block' box. I, also, have 'Always allow session cookies' checked.

And, I have SpywareBlaster 3.1 installed coupled with a custom block list.

I run Ad-Aware about once every two weeks and it finds no tracking cookies.

Maybe, I don't get any tracking cookies because I don't have any Cookies on my computer when I setup IE6, Privacy settings and run SpywareBlaster installer.

However, you are right in one aspect. I do get cookies. But, none are tracking.

ski123--We do not seem to disagree that you will get cookies if the site generating them is a legacy site. Whether they are downloading tracking cookies is just the luck of the draw.
Also, concerning SpywareBlaster's optional function to add sites to your Restricted Sites, inclusion of a site in Restricted Sites has nothing to do with the site's ability to download cookies. Rather Restricted Sites are restricted in their ability to run ActiveX controls, scripting, Java, etc.

Welshjim,

I am not trying to disagree or argue with anyone. All I'm saying is that I do not get any tracking cookies with my IE6 options and SpywareBlaster installed with all protection enabled.

Quote:

And, SpywareBlaster will block tracking cookies.

From Javacool's SpywareBlaster website:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Quote:
The most important step you can take is to secure your system. And SpywareBlaster is the most powerful protection program available.

1) Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
2) Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
3) Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
So, with my IE6 Privacy settings along with SpywareBlaster, I am tracking cookie free.

Regards,
ski123

Manage all your cookies

I resolved all my cookie desires when I installed CookieCop 2 a few years ago. It was free then, but it's still worth the PC Magazine download library subscrption price to get the latest version 3 at -->

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1538809,00.asp

You can manage your cookies by site, type, etc., and this baby really works. I have it set up to allow only allow cookies from my normally traveled sites and it blocks all others (including spyware) from other sites. There's a small bit of a hassle in the setup because it runs as a proxy server, but the directions are clear and you will welcome the control.

Good Luck

My System

I've been using AdSubtract Pro for almost three years, along with NIS, and I get no ads, and few cookies. I posted the above info because I cleaned up a very messy computer, and thought that the chart would benefit someone else trying to set up a computer with only XP available.

PeteC Were you able to open the pdf? I've never had a problem with my AA pdf writer. Ice said it opened fine for him.

No - nor was I able to open a txt file Steve Jones posted in another forum. Must be something to do with my security settings - tighter than Fort Knox ? , although Windows bbs is in the trusted zone. I'll have a go at sorting this one day.

ski123--Yes, SpywareBlaster does block certain tracking cookies, but if you look at the list you will see that it is limited--much shorter than the BHO's blocked. And I do not think any new tracking cookies have been added for some time, but I could be wrong about that.
Also this is not a function of adding sites to Restricted Sites, but rather using SWB's engine to block those specific cookies.
And none of this is to dispute your claim that you do not get tracking cookies, nor to wish them upon you.

Johanna--The .pdf opened fine for me. (I Saved it and opened from the Saved position, not from the browser.) But none of the links are active.
I use .pdf so seldomly, so do not know if that is normal or not. Without the links, the information is somewhat less valuable. Perhaps better as a .doc?
