Browser won't connect to web pages

Hello, I wasn't sure if this should be posted here, or in the other Internet forum so I apologize if this is the wrong forum.

In any event, I've had a major problem with my internet since this past friday. I ran Ad-Aware 6.0 to kill some spyware that was lagging my connection and it found a lot of stuff. So I had it removed. After rebooting, everytime I connected to the net I was unable to view webpages. It would simply give me page not displayed.

I thought it might be my isp, but I've tried other isp's since and all return the same result. They can all connect, and when using dial up networking, the connection tab shows bytes being both sent and received, but still I'm unable to connect to anything be it websites, instant messenge etc.

I've tried just about everything I could including making sure SSL and the rest were checkmarked in Internet Tools, though PCT isn't on the list under security and I'm running IE6.

I've tried changing my internet options, connection settings, networking settings, etc. Nothing seems to fix it. I've uninstalled and resintalled my dial up adapter and modem repeatedly as well. I've run the win98se troubleshooter extensively and followd everything It told me to do, including verifying my winsock.dll files and restoring them off the win98se cd. I've checked Device manager many times as well to see if it reported any errors and it has not.

I also tried a few other things that I don't recall off hand.

Yet, still, I'm able to connect, but not actually "connect" apparently.

Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated and thank you for your time.

I'd take a wild guess and say it's your winsock that got corrupted. You can get the fix here.

 

Thanks for the reply but it's not the winsock.dll, at least I don't think so. I've restored the winsock.dll off the win98se cd multiple times. It didn't help.

I've also resintalled windows and that didn't help either. And I'm using my brother's computer right now, so I don't have the ability to download any files on my own comp. My floppy drive is busted as well so carrying the file over that way wouldn't work.

I also might add that refreshing IE returns it saying "Opening Page etc." and it tries to load but just ends up giving page not displayed. So I "am' connected to the internet, but it's not allowing me to connect to anything.

Meanwhile, you said It would simply give me page not displayed. Do you mean it gave you the standard 404 error page saying it couldn't find the page you wanted or did you mean something else? And was the 98 reinstall a 'repair' install over the existing 98 load or did you wipe out the existing and install fresh?

 

My apologies on the subject. In any event, I'm getting the typical "Page Cannot Be Displayed./DNS error Try refreshing your browser or make sure your internet options are set to SSL etc. on th security tab" that stuff.

It's also not just IE. I can't connect to anything online be it IE, Instant Messenger, servers, ftp, etc.

And the win98 resintall was a repair over the existing install. I'm unable to do a full reinstall from scratch due to having a broken floppy and being unable to backup many important files.

 

Try the winsock fix that Daizy posted. It will more than likely fix the problem. When your winsock gets broke it involves more than restoring the winsock.dll. In fact, restoring the winsock.dll usually isn't necessary. If the winsock repair doesn't do it you can restore the backup that Adaware makes when it removes stuff. Problem is, if you do that, you'll end up with all the junk back.

 

Where does Ad-Aware keep it's backup? I didn't notice any backups at all. And I'm unable to download the file to my own computer due to the problem listed. And my floppy drive is busted so I can't take the file over from here to there that way

 

Open Adaware and at the top right you'll see some icons. Click on the one that looks like a box. A window will open showing all the backups. The one you want should be easy enough to figure out as they are dated. If you restore the backup and are able to get your internet access back, download the winsock fix and then try it again. You might want to give Spybot a shot at it first. Maybe it can remove it without breaking things. It makes backups by default also.

 

I truly would try the winsock fix anyhow. It's quick and painless. Make sure you reboot after.
