This is a cumulative update that includes the functionality of all the previously-released updates for Internet Explorer 5.01, Internet Explorer 5.5, and Internet Explorer 6.0. Additionally, it eliminates five newly-discovered vulnerabilities.
Severity Rating: Critical
Affected Software
Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0, Service Pack 6a
Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Service Pack 6a
Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition, Service Pack 6
Microsoft Windows 2000, Service Pack 2, Service Pack 3, Service Pack 4
Once again MS cannot get their messages straight.
The quote in Arie's post seems to come from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tre...n/MS03-048.asp
which implies it is the version of Windows which determines need and includes Win98FE.
Then MS has sent out their email Security Bulletin summary which says
" MS03-048 - Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer (824145)
- Affected Software:
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
- Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0,
Service Pack 6a
- Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Service Pack 6a
- Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server
Edition, Service Pack 6
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 2, Service
Pack 3, and Service Pack 4
- Microsoft Windows XP,
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1
- Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition
- Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64 bit Edition"
No Win 98 at all, but still the need is defined by Windows version.
And then there is http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=824145
Which defines the need by version of Internet Explorer and does not mention Win98FE, but does mention Win98SE.
So take your pick. Based on Arie's post I installed the fix last night, and so far seems to work OK. I run Win98FE.
Based on Arie's post I installed the fix last night
If it installs, it probably works: in most other cases it will refuse to install (try installing an IE 6 SP1 update on IE 6.0, and you'll see what I mean)
I 'installed' the patch for IE 5.5 SP2 and it seems to have taken as its number appears in the 'About' details where all the patches are listed.
However, according to my Windows Update Installation History, the update failed four times (I only tried it once)! I'm using Win 98FE so I wasn't certain this patch was for me anyway.
Although there may not be any connection, since installing it, I've noticed that the Update site doesn't want to play with me any more. Previously it always offered IE6 as a Crucial and .Net framework and DX 9b as Recommended updates but now it doesn't find anything.
I think you are on the right lines here. I know we reluctant upgraders were targetted for the chop soon but, like you, I thought we had a bit longer to go.
Cest la vie! When this old box finally gives up the ghost I'm looking at Macs (no, not raincoats!)
Be aware that this particular update will (or could) trash your scrollbar operation in IE6. See Bug Report for details. I uninstalled the update and my scrollbar is back to normal.

RASelkirk--Interesting article. Thanks.
My scrollbar has been acting flaky lately, though not exactly the problems mentioned. Never thought about linking that to the patch.
As you can in my post to Togg, I suspect the patch also messed up access to Windows Update for Win98FE users. That problem seemed to clear up itself this past weekend.
It is amazing that MS still doesn't test out the effects of their patches before release.
I am running Windows 98FE and IE 5.5. I had been having the same problems mentioned in other posts with Windows Update, but when I accessed it through the Start Menu, the scan ran. The results, however, show only an update to IE 6 SP1 as a critical update. Nothing about the new security cumulative patch.
QUESTION: Which should I do first, the cumulative security patch on IE 5.5 or the update to IE 6? Any advice at all on anything about avoiding computer problems will be appreciated.
For the record, the Update site is back to offering IE6, DX 9.0b and .NET Framework so, as Jim pointed out, the 'problem' has been fixed. Until the next time!
