I'm now satisfied that I have only a partial installation of IE 6...in fact a hodge podge of files it seems. It was suggested that I download and try reinstalling IE 6 over top of what's now there. This might work real fine but I'm concerned of simply compounding my existing mess.
The only MS knowledge doc I can find for removing IE6 when it's not in the Add/Remove programs menu, is Q312474: How to Remove IE 6 or OE 6 Before You Reinstall Windows. I have no desire [for now] of reinstalling Windows]
My question is this: Can I deal with the migration dynamic link library files and their associated registry keys to remove IE 6 WITHOUT messing up Windows such that I need to reinstall the W98SE OS?
Some expert guidance could perhaps save me a peck of trouble before I create my own.

Thanks for your reply but I admit to some trepidition and confusion.
Firstly, I don't like messing with Windows 98SE when I'm not sure what I'm doing.
Secondly, I don't want to remove Internet Explorer, just fragments of Ver 6 or repair same.
Thirdly, for the latter, the User Manual for IEradictor says I should use another program to simply `repair' IE, to wit: "If you are just trying to fix an IE problem you need IEject
(IEradicator's little cousin) instead (http://98lite.net/ieject.html."
Finally, I cannot find the website and receive a possible broken link message at the address you gave AND a search of the site does not locate IEject.
Guidance please and have any other users ever tried this program? No offense to the recommender is intended.

Pro: A lot of people get in deep trouble "doing" when they don't know what they are doing.
Con: Learning means trying something you haven't tried before.
Secondly, I don't want to remove Internet Explorer, just fragments of Ver 6 or repair same.
Pro: I admire your trying to fix it rather than reinstall. Someone may come along who can give you exactly what you are looking for.
Con: There may come a time when you have had enough and decide to re-install IE. I have dumped IE6 a few times and reinstalled it. It is working OK. (Backup your address book and other folders--see link at bottom).
IEradicator
I don't know about 'IEject' [tho maybe I should] but I have used IEradicator and it worked fine for me.
If you really want to learn this stuff:
1. Partition your drive. Put Windows on the primary and everything else on the secondary. That way, formatting C: and reloading Windows will not wipe out all your other files.
2. Get a CD Writer (ROM burner-$60 to $200). That way you can periodically save your goodies.
I had Windows98 SE for over a year before I dared re-install it! Now it's no big deal.
Scroll to What Is IEradicator and note the second paragraph. Problem is I can't find the wee fellow.
Now, back to IEradicator, do I understand correctly that it removes everything about IE in one fell swoop [from the file list I think it does] and then one simply downloads IE 5.5 or 6 and it installs completely without any of 4 or 5.0 versions or Outlook? [I use Eudora so I'd be happy about that]
And further, that it touches/interferes with nothing else concerning Win 98 SE?
Don, I'm pushing but my thinking isn't too bright these days. I'm well into my 70s and living on powerful pain killers every 3-4 hours. Your patience is appreciated.
The two times I used it, it did just what the name says: Eradicate all traces of IE. Then install whatever you want. BUT: anytime you fool around with IE, you had best backup the address book and mail folders.

Two more items on address books. Even after backing up the address book (wab) I also like to have a copy in plain English. So backup as 'Text (CSV)'. Getting super-redundant, print out a copy as follows:
If Welt has the addresses in Eudora set to Nicknames he don't need the WAB. Or any other address book.
That is what is VERY NICE about Eudora. If it is on another drive and using Nicknames Windows, IE and OE can go completely to hell and has no effect on Eudora addresses. Or stored e-mail.
I have not had a WAB for years.

Thanks both of you. Billy Bob is correct re Eudora. I haven't a worry or desire to have OE. All I need is a clear mind and a little nerve to venture to do what MS was long under the gun for denying - the ability to disengage IE and OS.
Sounds like it's worth trying.
To Dan: Did you have a look for that wee IEject which I couldn't find? I guess what also makes me gun shy is that the author cannot be reached, save to subscribe or buy. Surely an email dress would be available to report failures despite the `We've made a note....'.
