Hi,
We have been having a problem with Internet Exlorer 6 recently. When we go to a web site and then click on links to go to other pages, IE 6 just closes for no reason. We have to go back to the Desktop and re-click on IE 6.
Also some of the links to pages do not bring the pages in. We just get a blank page with a title across the top.
We have re-installed IE 6 and Also run the repair function on IE 6 but this doesn't solve the problem.
Has anyone had this problem and, if so, how did you correct it.
Thanks

Hi Brett,
Thanks forthe reply.
I ran the commands that were in your first "here" and when I got to "regsvr32 Oleaut.dll" I got the following message"
"Load Library("Oleat.dll") failed-Thespecified module could not be found".
I then ran the System File Checker but I still get the above message.
I tried both the repair and the re-installation as described in the referenced article previously and neither corrected the problem.
I have been looking for a way to update Windows XP Home Edition to see if that would help but each time I find a procedure for doing this, it requires a Windows XP CD which I don't have.
I have Windows XP Home Edition pre-loaded by IBM and they furnish a Recovery Partition on the hard drive and I also got the Product Recovery CD's from IBM. Neither of these provide a method of updating Windows XP. All IBM suggests is doing a complete Recovery but by doing this you lose everything you have added since you got the computer.
IBM will be another system that I will warn people away from. Up to now I thought only HP was the only OEM that didn't supply a XP installation disc.
"but by doing this you lose everything you have added since you got the computer."
Do you mean user data? Or the settings and MS updates?
If settings, one way to alliviate the problem is to take "pictures" of all your settings before hand. Thanks to a poster, Margot, this is the way to use the print screen key: hold down the <Alt> key and hit the <Print Screen> key. Bring up Wordpad or Word and paste. The image will be the top window.
MS updates can be downloaded for saving from this site: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...corporate=true which is called the Catalog site. Get a list of your installed patches via the install history at the MS update site and download them. Then it would be a matter of installing them manually when your back up.
All this assumes that you have some removable media backup capability such as cd-rom or Zip.

No, not settings, I mean we would have to reload all Software that we have added since we got the computer.
As you probably know, when you use IBM's Recovery Program, it re-formats your hard drive and then installs just the preloaded software and Windows XP which was installed at the factory.
I may have to do this but I'm putting it off until it becomes absolutely necessary. I can use Windows XP normally without problems. IE 6 is where I'm having the problems. OE 6 seems to be OK too.
I guess if you could comrpletely remove IE 6 and then do a clean install it might help but it isn't possible the way Windows XP and IE 6 are set up.
Hi All,
Info for anyone who's been following this problem.
We seem to have stumbled on a solution to this problem with IE 6.
We uninstalled Ad Aware 6 because we learned that they do not update their product very often. We then installed SpyBot Search and Destroy, version 1.2 and then ran Fix Selected Problems.
So far this has corrected the problems. No more IE 6 Closings for no apparent reason and we can now get the web pages that were blank to now display.
Apparently there was some kind of Ad or Spy Ware on our computer that was causing the problem.
Hi Charlesvar,
I'm not very familr with SpyBot yet. Where is the backup folder?
It's not listed under C:\ Program Files\ SpyBot.
I can find the list by hitting the Recover button but, I believe, it's 27 items.
If I could find the folder, I could copy contents and then post it.
