Slow mouse responce, jerky scrolling and

I'm posting here because I think the problem I am having is related to IE. For some time now, and I can't put my finger on the exact date, I have been having some problems while browsing some pages. My home page is MSN.com and I can get around in there fine without any problems. But if I go to Google for example and the links to follow I start to experience the problems. If I drag my mouse on the scroll bar some pages seem to be slow or jerky to respond. If I drag my mouse across a document to copy and paste, in notepad for example, it may take as long as 20 or 30 seconds before the document is highlighted and then the same time before I can get the right click to respond and get the copy function. I am not having any problems with any programs on my computer that react the same way. That is why I feel it is an IE problem. I have been to MS and updated all critical updates, security ect., and win. drivers. I have even tried reloading Windows. I'm at a point where I'm not sure what to do. That is why I have turned to my old stand by here. Thanks in advance for you help, Steve.

Hi ibew jw,

If you "feel it is an IE problem ", run the Internet Explorer Repair Tool.

1) Do an End Task on everything except Explorer and Systray
2) Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information.
3) On the menu bar, click Tools and select Internet Explorer Repair Tool.
4) Choose Repair Internet Explorer.
5) Reboot

The symptoms you are describing are of an overloaded system...being asked to do just about all it can handle so it's laboring.

That's due to other stuff running in the background, either on purpose or without your knowledge.

First, check your System Tray by the clock. If you have a lot of stuff running there that you don't need to load on startup (that you can fire up from the start menu when you need it), open the ones that will open and poke around in each program's preferences to see if it will give you the option to not load on startup or "load when Windows starts" or something simliar.

Next, scan for spyware. Download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or AdAware (you can use them both.) Let whichever one you choose clean up any spyware it finds.

Thanks for your reply but I have already run the IE repair tool. In fact I have run it a couple of times and one time prompted that it could not be repaired so I ran setup again. It did not fix the problem, but that is a great idea and one that I would have suggested. Thanks, Steve

I agree.
But I'm not a virgin to Win 98 and I keep my startup clean. The only thing running in startup is sys. tray, scan reg. and my anti virus program. I have always suspected some spyware and I thought that this is where it started when I installed registered copies of Spyware Nuker and Adware I have not yet been comfortable with the programs since I installed them. I don't know why the programs tells me that D:\clipart or Blah....... is infected. Thanks to you both, Steve

Same Problem, Now Fixed!

I had the same problem, and after months of trying everything suggested, I found that running my HP recovery disc cleared up the problem...the guys here said it may have been some sort of "parasite" that got in, past my anti-virus stuff...who knows, but the recovery did the trick for me. Good luck to you!! It's not hopeless!

Thanks for your impute and the article reads as it could be a possibility but I don't feel comfortable with the registry issue. I still may try that after a little more research.

Good how you doin'. I have considered both of your ideas. In fact a few days ago I found newer drivers for both my video and mouse. The mouse drivers were freakin out my mouse so I went back to the original. The video driver, when I installed it, I was prompted that the driver I was using was a better match. But again thanks to all. I will hammer this out if it takes a bigger hammer. I am going to try a different video card. I see that my video card has only 2MB of memory and with the animated graphics and complex web pages today I thought that may not be enough. Thanks again, Steve.

May I ad that I typed this in notepad and then cut and pasted in OE to use the spell checker. When I cut it from notepad and pasted it in OE it was very quick to respond but when I pasted it here there is a few second delay and even as slow as I type I can look up at the screen and the display is way behind me. WOW thats slow.

scrolling delayed FIXED!! To MIZ

I have been having these problems for a while and I followed Miz's suggestion with Spybot and Adaware. Adaware fixed it. I am so excited that it worked. I tried all the other suggestions and they didn't work. Thanks tons MIZ.

ibew jw - have you looked into the possibility you've gotten CoolWebSearch on your system somehow? It causes the exact symptoms you're experiencing.

You can read more about it and download a removal tool from Spyware info page.

Apparently, Spybot and AdAware aren't terribly effective in getting rid of CoolWebSearch...read the above page and you'll see why.

Sweet Mother of Jesus, I have control of my computer back. I love this place. That is exactly what it was. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. I can tell you that it worked: My oldest daughter in Ft. Hood Texas, had a new baby boy three weeks ago and called to tell us that that latest photos were stored on Wal-Mart's photo page so we can go see them. It took for ever yesterday to scroll through and look at the pictures. I just loaded the fix, rebooted and returned to the photo page, and Oh my God what a difference. Thank you again soooooooooo much, Steve.

After preparing my C:/ drive for formatting(saving stuff,etc), i restarted to give the format command, but forgot the windows disk to get into dos. I restarted that time, and decided to give one last Google search on the issue and got this link....... worked like a charm! Thanks!

 

Mis and all the people on this WONDERFUL FORUM which I found tonight on Goole with the prompt scrolling jerky. (Yep - that's what is WAS - Jerky : )

I love you all - if I could just jump through my browzer, I would hug you all. I downloaded the file you suggested Mis and it worked - it worked : ).......I just couldn't believe it - I have hardly slept for 3 days because the @#$(&^ problem has been annoying me so much.
