IE error message. keeps shutting down!

We keep getting bumped off the Internet, and it’s not specific to any site or activity.

The Error Messages received are:

“EXPLORER: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.â€

Details are: "Invalid page fault in module MSHTML.DLL@0177:635ff7f3.â€

“An error message has occurred in Internet Explorer. It will close. If this continues, restart your computer.â€

Please help us!!!!

 

What OS?


For any version of windows do the following:

Configure CleanMgr to max settings
Go to Start-Run and type

cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

Go to Start-Run and type

cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

If win95 98 or ME do the following

Cleanups
These are for 95 98 ME only!

Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

NOTE: Win ME cannot boot to DOS so you must get a Win98 install boot floppy and boot to a: So get one somewhere.

Or go here from the computer you are using now and d/l the win98 boot disk http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm . Get the one that says Windows 98 SE OEM.

After downloading this to your HD execute it with a floppy in drive a: and it will produce the disk. Make the disk and boot from it!

Type these commands exactly hit enter at the end (do not type the notes that are in parenthesis like this).

del c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)
del c:\windows\*.swp
deltree c:\windows\shelli*.*
deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* (answer yes to all) "ALL "
deltree c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*
deltree c:\windows\history\*.*
deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*

Remove floppy hit CTRL ALT DEL to reboot the computer

Try doing a "repair" on IE.

> Add/ Remove Programs
> Select Internet Explorer
> Repair Option

This error is "EXPLORER" not IEXPLORE so not directly related to internet but can effect it.

It is very likely you have spyware so download install and run the following:

Spyware and adware removal

SpyBot http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
Run this twice delete all it finds, "ALWAYS" run this before AdAware.
Leave all it wants to leave after the second run.

AdAware 6.0 http://www.lavasoft.com
Run only after SpyBot!
Make sure to configure to Max settings, all files and compressed files.Delete all it finds

BHO Demon http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
A BHO is like a autostart/startup that only runs when you run the Browser.
This program runs stand alone no install is required post me the items it finds other than the below. Normal entries here would be Acro….. (Acrobat Reader) or Nav…. (Norton Anti virus).

Don't be discouraged that the former did not fix the problem, but they are very good for your computer anyway!

The failure has to be in Internet Explorer. I think the "Explorer "above is a typo.

1. The title indicates "IE error message"
2. We keep getting bumped off the Internet(Explorer wouldn't cause that)
3. MSHTML.DLL is an IE module
4. "An error message has occurred in Internet Explorer

I agree that Spyware can get in the way. I would still try an IE repair first, just to ensure that the base software is in sync.

Found your "checking in" message. Hope I explained how to find your post threads.

If so and you find this do the following.

Go to the message from Whit and do the process to repair Internet explorer.

Do this first before you do the downloads and repairs that I suggest.

Both of your seperate posts should have been covered in the original since they are additionl symtpoms and are connected. Solve one and the other will probably be corrected.

Dear all,

We are posting on 2 sites because we are inexperienced enought to not know that there is a relationship tween the 2. The windows 98 post is about a problem that has no significance other than being annoying. This post refers to a new message(2) that appeared after recently installing yahoo(may not have any relationship)that interrupts our internet use. We have tried all of the suggestions without a positive outcome although we feel like we have cleaned up out computer significantly. Any other thoughts. Confirm specifically, did you download install and run

SpyBot

Adaware

and BHODemon?

And did you do the steps directed by Whit?

We did Whit's IE repair immediately and then the SpyBot, Adaware and BHODemon. We also did 2 Norton virus checks, scan disc, and a defrag. Now what????? Barb

 

Tried idea's supplied by Alice's link??? Have you peeked into these yet?

The cause for this error has many possible reasons. Read the sublink topics and see if there's anything that could directly apply to you or your software.

The Mshtml.dll file is responsible for image rendering.

Since this is recent, it may be helpful to know what you may have done recently. Installed or unistalled anything, updated anything, changed graphic settings...etc.

Just hoping for a little more to go on to help pin this down.

Just noticed your post and inquiry into the mysterious "closing.exe " error. All of this may be tied into this one problem. I think you need to concentrate on the "what, why and where" this is coming from.

Have you done the "file find" for closing.exe to see if this exists? If found right click it and select properties to see what nfo you get from this. What folder is it in?

Could also do an advanced search for files *.* that contain text closing.exe.

Have you tried running SFC to see if it flags any files as corrupt?

Keeping this in mind:
Here's some friendly handy dandy advice to accompany an SFC use recommendation:

Sfc is best left, used as an extractor for file replacement and a "Helper" tool ONLY. For those who have no foreknowledge or familiarity with their OS files, drivers [.dll's etc.] it will be very confusing and intimidating. In addition, in many cases, be down right dangerous when it comes to inflicting cases of "Versionitus ".

If you do not use it often and routinely to update the baseline file such as after all upgrades/updates, new installations or uninstalls you can easily be over whelmed by all the files that get flagged.

Don't get me wrong, this can be a good tool for a troubled OS but it takes a great deal of upkeep and a thorough understanding of how the baseline file list and files of description: altered/changed, corrupt, and deleted are determined.
For example:

Altered files= If System File Checker detects a change in date, time, size, or version, it considers the file to be........

Changed= a change in date, time, or version, file will be reported as changed. SFC can not determine if this was a good/bad, planed or unplanned. It is up to you as the user to determine if this change was an due to an unplanned overwrite, virus, system glitch etc. or an "expected "/planed change as a result via an update/upgrade or install.

Maybe Corrupt= You are always notified of damaged files. A file is identified as damaged if its date and version match, but the "CRC" [File size: A checksum added to a file entry whenever a file is written to disk, used to see if the file has changed] value does not match the baseline. Usually, if a file is flagged as corrupt your best bet is to err on sfc determination that it is corrupt. You should have enabled the option to always backup file before replacement in case of mis- judgment.

Deleted=self explanatory.
NOTE*I had this option enabled but have since disabled it as I frequently install and uninstall app's and games. This got to be more of a nuisance than an aid.

To sum up:
This tool should only be used as a helper app unless:
*You have formed a habit of running this as part of a regular routine to keep the "baseline list" up to date such as after an update/upgrade/install/uninstall,
*Or are specifically using it to check for "file corruption flags" due to current application problem]. Any file flagged as corrupted or changed should be further investigated before taking sfc's word that it needs replacement. If a file is flagged as such just click sfc's "ignore option" for now, until you can confirm it is not part of a recent install or update.
note*Generally never replace a newer version file with an older one.

ADDITIONAL NOTES*
1]there are always exceptions to every rule and there are even workarounds for the exceptions.
2]Usually, if a file is flagged as corrupt your best bet is to err on sfc determination that it is corrupt. It has a backup option that will offer to backup any file you replace so this is reversible.
3]known bug in original win98 SFC has been fixed with updates or winSE, but if you have not employed such updates:

What ya' got running at startup?

This just may be a bad app or script, running at startup that is making an internal call to close and is unable to. The fact that it faults and fails to do what it is suppose to [CLOSE] may be interfering with explorer/iexplore load.

Got to admit though, this sure sounds viral or trojan in nature, how current is your dat file for Norton. May need to run a specialized Trojan" cleaner. Many virus programs can not properly detect Trojan's.

Thanks again for all the possibilities. Will try to find some time today to administer some of the new remedies. Since my hub and I also have an older teen using this computer we get a lot of activity. Wish we could just take off everything and start over. Is that a possibility. Barb

We uninstalled some old and new programs and sites and so far have not seen the IE message. Thanks for all your help!! Wish I could identify the problem but at least now we are staying on as long as we like. Thank you again. You all are great!!!! Barb and Paul

Guess we'll never know who or what was causing the error, although we can assume it was application or startup related.
