Need Internet Explorer help

After installing a new tax program I have been told that I must have at least Internet Explorer 5.5. Now I have IE 5.0. I cannot find IE in the Add/Remove programs. How do I upgrade to IE 5.5. Must I remove the existing program? How? Where do I get IE 5.5? I can get IE 6.0 as part of the tax program but it is my understanding that persons who have upgraded to 6.0 have had problems. I admit that I know very little about Internet Explorer. You advice will be appreciated. Thank you.

Some people have these problems with all versions!

I have installed 6.0 on many many with no problems.

Just do some cleanup and prep 1st.

Hello Steve and Mike,

Thank you for the prompt responses. I did as Steve recommended but the information seems to apply to administrators and Windows XP and Windows 2K. Also the discussion about --Start/Windows Update is not on my system (Windows 98se).

I checked another computer with the tax program installed and it was using IE 6.0 without any problems. If I were to go with IE 6.0 ( it is available) do I have to remove the existing IE 5.0? Thank you.

Hi Steve and Mike,

I finally bit the bullet and installed IE 6.0. So far, so good. No problems. Thank you for your help.

dfo a search here at this board for Turbo Tax. I posted a sloution to this issue last year at tax time! TurboTax requires IE 5.5 minimumly ONLY so as to be able to automatically download and install the tax updated forms and program updates. But these updates can be downloaded and installed manually.

note: I may have posted the solutiion at another board, I'll try and find it.

Found my solution I posted at another board last year!
(I still use IE 5.01SP2 and Ido not wish to use 5.5 yet on my main system)

For all you users of Turbo Tax 2001 this may be helpful info:

This years tax product automatically installs Internet Explorer 5.5 and the install does NOT give an option to keep your existing version of IE. I found out the hard way and then had to uninstall Turbo Tax and then roll back to my original IE installation, IE4, and then upgrade back to IE5.01SP2. What a pain in the arse!

However, I did successfully install Turbo Tax 2001 WITHOUT IE 5.5. This is how to do it:

1. Copy all the files on the CD to a folder on HD.
2. Delete the folder called IE. (contains all the IE5.5 cabs and install files)
3. Run the setup.exe that was copied from the CD.

Turbo tax will successfully install, but will fail to locate the IE install files and tell you that the program may not run correctly. This is no big deal, because the only thing Turbo Tax needs IE5.5 for is to get "one click updates" to the Tax program and tax filing online. Not a big deal because updates to the program and revised tax forms can be downloaded manually at the Intuit website. There are currently no updates available at this time.

note: Turbo Tax 2001 will also install a folder in c\program files\common files. This folder contains other folders with the targets of shortcuts it places on the desktop such as AOL sign up and a few others. Those folders can be deleted!
