Ay, this has been plaguing me for about two months. Every time I download -any- executable, it is inevitably corrupt. Every single time, with no breaks. I've frequently tried to download trial programs, such as various FTPs, but I am broken by this terrible corruption. I use a Broadband connection and the downloads are not at all interrupted, also I've uninstalled and reinstalled many programs to see if they were causing the corruption, which includes Internet Explorer. I'm not sure whether this is IE's fault or my computers, and I've scanned my system files multiple times as well. Does anyone know what could be the cause of this?

Can you remember any software or hardware drivers you installed just prior to the problem starting? If so, try uninstalling it.

Do you have any other internet applications (instant messenger, email, weather bug, auto updater, etc.) running that are trying to share the bandwidth? If so, close all of them and see if that helps.

Do you have an anti-virus program running in the background? If so, disable it and try another download.

Those are all I can think of at the moment.

Thanks, but I make sure all of the above are checked and such. I am pretty sure it lies within a corrupt file I have, however, I have no true knowledge of exactly when this problem started occurring. Would you know of any way I can see which programs are affecting my downloads specifically? Even so, after clearing my C drive twice (the last time with a QuickRestore disk) there were errors when restoring. Is my computer just not worth saving?

    Consider all Miz advised plus

    Clean all temps

    It is very likely spy/adware.

Can you recieve attachments? Are they also currupt?

If so I can email you Adaware and Spybot to clean these.

Worse case a worm or trojan

    Vist here:

    http://www.anti-trojan.net/at.asp?l=en&t=onlinecheck

If you do the cleanups of temps first the scan will go faster.

I'm pretty sure I can receive attachments, it's worked correctly before...and if you could send 'em, that'd be great. I suppose I should get Norton tomorrow, just to be sure.

Nope- I cannot begin to count how many times I have run all of the System checks available to me within the past two months. My computer apparently thinks it's all dandy and clean.

You say "executables ". Does that mean EXE files, and that others, like ZIP, work ok?

Is it all exe files? Try downloading a small one.

Are you having any other "strange" things happening, like hangs, etc?

    How old is the PC?

Nothing else out of the ordinary- large Zip files are indeed corrupt, but it's always the .EXE files which fail on me. My PC is 'round three years old.

    Ok!

    I sent 4 files.

Adaware: Install Adaware put check in all but floppy and CD delete all it finds. Copy the reffile.awr into the c:\Program files\Lavasoft folder before you run it, this is the latest signatures overwrite the old one that is there.

Let us know how many it finds.

Spybot: Install and run delete all it finds!

EasyCleaner: Run all but the duplicate files. On start menu cleanup do not force anything it warns about.

Saying you have run tests is not enough for me, so here is what I need to know!

    1. What OS do you have win98 ME win2k or XP?
    2. Does scandisk report errors?
    3. Did you clean your windows temp folder? How?
    4. Did you clean Temp Internet files? How?
    5. What is running at startup.

HOLD OFF ON BUYING NORTON UNTILL WE FIX THIS!

I run Windows 98, and ScanDisk does report errors at times, but always fixed. I use Disk Cleanup, or I manually clean with Windows Explorer. Startup is basically systray and such, with the whole Task thing too. I try to keep my 'bar clean. I've scanned a few times and there were over 20 infected items. Oh boy! Time to do a test download, no? Thanks so much for all the help thus far.

mineekiko--Perhaps out in left field, but here is a possible fix, if nothing else works.
This fix would normally be used if you had told us you could not download (especially .exe) at all. You have nothing to lose by considering this.
Start|Run|type regedit|click OK|click on the + signs in this order HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins. When you click the + next to Plugins you may see a "key" called Extensions. Right click on Extensions and delete it. Reboot. If you are not comfortable in Regedit, then, before you delete Extensions, click Registry|Export. If you do not like the results you can restore the situation before you deleted Extensions by going to where you Exported and right clicking|Merge.
If you do not see Extensions, then just exit Registry Editor.
What you are deleting, if you find Extensions, is a QuickTime PlugIn. You probably will not miss it, even if this does not solve the problem.

By scans do you mean adaware and/or spybot?

Ok sounds like you are basically covering the bases on cleanup>

Do you have a virus scanner?

Did you do the online virus scan or is this the scan you are refering to.

    Do the Easyclean!

Purge the TIF folder (being sure to delete index.dat) and then increase the space available to that folder.

Oh, yeah, sorry to keep you hangin', guys, but it worked! I can't thank y'all enough. I'm perplexed at why I hadn't thought of the spy/adware stuff, but that did the trick!
