How do I stop IE8 from displaying script error warnings even when it is not being used?

Hi Ken, In IE > Tools (Gear Wheel) > Internet Options > Advanced > Disable script debugging? Neil.

    Hi Ken.

Try this, open IE and click Tools< Internet Options< Advanced tab. Under the browsing category make sure the Disable Script debugging (Internet Explorer) and Disable Script Debugging (Other) are both checked and make sure the option that says Display a notification about every script error is unchecked. Then click Ok. Restart IE to see if that solves the problem.

Thank you both for prompt replies. First I have to find and restore the tool bar. I don't use IE; it is only for visitors.

Right click to the right of the last open tab and in the menu select 'Menu Bar'

I found it, but the icons were disabled. I fixed that and then found that script debugging was already disabled. No warnings yet today.

If IE 8 then it's probably an XP computer. I would delete the shortcuts to IE and install a more secure browser for visitors to use.

That is good advice overall, but I would have to uninstall IE. The problem occurs when IE is not being used. I tried disabling automatic updates, but that didn't help. I had posted the URL of the offending page, but it was deleted. Anti-virus scan finds nothing.

I have used Mozilla Firefox as my browser for 10 years and never had to uninstall IE. FF is set as my Default browser, but if I choose to open IE and use it - it asks me if I want to make it my Default browser. You control what you want to do. Neil.

If you are getting script errors, specifically if getting IE script error messages, and IE has not been executed by a user, then you definitely have some sort of infection, or there is some other installed software that uses IE for its update mechanism or reporting functions. Some software, such as for printers, will send usage stats to its company servers. Some software is advertisement based and will connect to ad servers, these ads usually are coded using javascript.

The idea that some other device software is using IE and causing the problem is a good clue. I will pursue that.

This problem peaked at 10 times a day and then disappeared. If it reoccurs, I now know how to proceed, thanks to all who replied. I will mark it resolved, even though the root cause has not been identified.
