:confused:I'm running Vista and IE 9. (version 9.0.8112.16421)

In Browsing History, I have "Delete browsing history on exit" checked. When clicking on Delete, everything in the following window is checked. Then delete. I also run Disc Cleanup and delete all files found there.

With IE open, clicking on Tools, Internet Options, Settings under Browsing History, then Days to keep browsing history set to 0. When clicking on Settings, then View Files, there are still a handful of files displayed. When trying to delete from there, I get the warning "Running a system command on this item might be unsafe. Do you wish to continue? " Even after clicking yes, the files won't delete. This appears to be happening in only one of the accounts. What's happening here? Thanks in advance.

See: "Days to Keep Pages in History" Set to 0 Displays Web Sites

Even though the article mentions Internet Explorer 4 & 5, I think nothing has changed with this particular setting.

If you do not want to leave any trace, in open IE and press this keyboard combination: Ctrl+Shift+P. This opens an InPrivate session that leaves no trace on your PC.

Would that be the same as In private browsing? That's the 3rd option under Tools. Thanks

Thanks. For clarification, no Temporary Internet Files will be saved? And, how do I get rid of the ones that I already have that resist deleting?

    1. Open Task Manager.
    2. Select explorer.exe > End Task.
    3. File Menu > Run New Task > cmd.
    4. Enter this command & press the Enter key:
    Code:
    RD /S/q "%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files "
    5. Close the prompt.
    6. File Menu > Run New Task > explorer.exe.

If no joy then these files are locked and likely put there by another program such as Windows Update, other software update programs, antivirus software, etc.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try the suggestions.

Forgot to ask: can I trust CCleaner enough to delete everything it finds? Thanks again.

OK. I ran the CCleaner 3 times until it didn't find anything, and the files are still there.
Hesitantly, I'll try the other suggestion.

I found explorer.exe under Processes; that's where I end process? Ending it came with a warning that made my finger tremble. Thanks.

I copied the entire link, and got an error message when I tried it. Should I have just used the part of the link in quotation marks? Thanks

I copied the entire link in the shaded box. The error message is: Windows cannot find 'RD'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again.

Now I know why you're sitting at that end of my computer. You're absolutely correct; I missed the cmd. step.

If I did everything right this time, I got the message: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process ".

I'm thinking that I should leave well enough alone.

You will get this message if another program is using that directory. On Vista, those file will be locked by either an antivirus program or some software's update program.

But most likely they are being used by Desktop Gadgets. Retry the command from an administrative command prompt. (rt click the command prompt shortcut > select Run as administrator) But prior to that, if using any gadgets, in addition to ending explorer.exe you must also end sidebar.exe, which can also be started again via Task Manager. Sidebar.exe uses the Temp Internet Files directory for its gadgets.

Many thanks getting me this far.

Do I get to the administrative command prompt from the command prompt window? I'm not sure where the shortcut is.

Will sidebar.exe automatically start again like explore.exe? Or do I have to manually do something? Thanks

Rt click the command prompt icon > select run as admin.
    You must restart sidebar.exe.

I'm not using sidebar, so I don't think I have to worry about it. Once I input the new command, how do the files go away? I'll go and try this. Thanks.
