Now I've upgraded to IE6SP1 from IE5.5, using W2k as my OS, the title bar (band right at the top of the IE/Windows Explorer screen between the "e" logo at the left hand end and the min/max/close buttons at the right hand end) only shows the first letter of an URL name (IE) or folder name (WE). The MS knowledge base only refers to this behaviour (Q225123) for IE5 and NT4 for specific software that I don't run (anyway).

    Any ideas?

    Welcome to the 'board.
There are a number of 3rd party apps that can cause this and they are not specific to NT 4.0 or IE 5.x. PrintMaster is one.

Try a Google Groups Search for "Q225123" without the quotes.

Unfortunately, I'm not running "Mijenix ZipMagic 98, Documagix Papermaster 98, or eFax HotSend program and the Windows Desktop Update ", nor am I using NT4 nor IE5.0. No other issues/solutions were apparent in the threads found by the Google search.

However, given the idea, I've tried closing all non-essential processes (W2k) I do run, to see if they effect IE6 this way - so far no luck. I'll keep trying and see if another program is the culprit.

    Tx for the thought.

After many hours research through many forums, I've come up with a solution!

    My research shows:
    1. Many people have this problem, but no general solutions are posted.
    2. Specific problem software are PCM/ZDNet's IconLock (http://groups.google.com/groups?q=i...F-8&selm=#YfGSbSlBHA.2080@tkmsftngp04&rnum=1,), "Mijenix ZipMagic 98, Documagix Papermaster 98, or eFax HotSend program and the Windows Desktop Update component are installed" (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q225123),
    and PrintMaster Live (http://groups.google.com/groups?q=i...1c1992a$d990dbb0$a4e62ecf@tkmsftngxa06&rnum=1)
    3. The issue seems to be "programs that use window subclassing AND that assume all window procedures are ANSI (vs. Unicode) " http://groups.google.com/groups?q=i...TF-8&selm=#YfGSbSlBHA.2080@tkmsftngp04&rnum=1
    4. My solution was to run PC Magazine's BHO Cop http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,270,00.asp
to detect which BHOs (Browser Helper Object) are running and then to run each alone and then in groups to see which program/combination of programs causes the effect. Many thanks to http://groups.google.com/groups?q=I...TF-8&selm=efc4zBwUCHA.3736@tkmsftngp11&rnum=6
    5. With BHO Cop, you can switch off the offending s/w, but switch it on again when needed - or just delete it, once identified.

My problem BHO was X-Portal, a superb multi-engine search tool - oh well, off to search for another search tool now!
