Tonight, I tried to right click on a link and open it in a new tab but 'Open in new tab' wasn't there. I Google searched and someone had a similar problem and they tried disabling Google Toolbar and 'Open in new tab' appeared again. I tried disabling Google Toolbar and restarting IE 9 and that option came back. I like having Google Toolbar there and tried reinstalling Google Toolbar but there is still no 'Open in new tab' when right clicking. Is anyone aware of this problem or have it themselves? Is there a way to open a link in a new tab with a combo of key like Ctrl+W for closing a window?

    Thanks for your help.

If you have a wheel mouse, click on a link with the wheel. That should open the link in a new tab.

Oh, yes...be sure you have tabbed browsing enabled in Tools>Internet Options>General tab>Tabs sections>Settings button.

I am on a laptop. Tabbed browsing is enabled and, as I mentioned, the 'Open in new tab' option appears when Google Toolbar is disabled.

On the Google toolbar, right click and in the menu that opens, left click "Google toolbar options. "

In the window that opens, click on the box "Enable the Google new tab page," click OK.

See if that does the trick.

Oops, sorry...according to this Google page that option is apparently available only for Firefox and has been removed for IE. No reason given, though.

Holding down the Ctrl button while clicking on a link opens it in a new tab.

This was caused by Google toolbar (automatically) updating to version 7.2

Just got an email from Google stating that it is a bug they are working on. I can see them removing the open in a new tab option from their toolbar search options, but to remove it from the right click context menu had to be a mistake.

Yeah, same here. No right-click "open in new tab option" in IE 9. New install on Win 7 64VM Fusion 4 on 2011 macbook... when Google toolbar is installed that option gets removed. When toolbar is disabled the option is back in place.

Thanks for the info, guys. Should this be marked as resolved because I now know what's going on or can it be left open because Google hasn't released a fix for the bug yet?

Yep - mark as resolved as cause of issue is known, i.e. Google TB v7.2 and the solution is in their hands.

    hi

I've the same problem for a few days. when i enable the google toolbar, 'open in new tab' option doesn't appear in the right click.

Now I wonder whether I will lose my history for searching in google toolbar if I install the latest release of google toolbar. I don't like to lose my history at all :((

If you allow Google Updater to update the Google Toolbar your search history will not be lost - if you install the latest version over the top of the existing tool bar you should not lose history, but I will not guarantee that :)

To run the Google Updater manually you wil find the .exe file in Program Files > Google > Updater. If you are running a 64 bit system and 32 bit IE look in Program Files (x86)

I don't bother with that right click route to open in a new tab - the scroll wheel button on my mouse is set to middle click which opens a link in a new tab.

If you are using a laptop you will have to use the right click option of course.

The only indication I see when the Google Updater runs automatically is a request from my firewall to allow the connection clearly you must be connected to the Internet when the updater runs.

Presumably you have checked the version of the tool bar on your computer?
