Hot Mail

Trying to set up a mail account using Outlook Express for my Hotmail but I don't know what to put in for the Incoming (POP3) and Outgoing (SMTP) server.

Hope someone can help me.

Thank you.

OE will not let you set up an account for Hotmail like that. (its a MS thing). When you click on account, mail, add, the second window you have to select "set up new account for hotmail, then follow along.

Or if you already have a Hotmail account, simply set your incoming mail server as an HTTP server, HTTP provider as Hotmail and it will handle the rest of the server configuration.

Hotmail was free and my choice for mail service, however, there came a day when I was locked out and there was a demand/request for $19.95 per year to gain access and re-establish an account. Apparently, there is a provision in the free contract that if the account is inactive for a length of time one will lose the account and whatever messages therein. I don't mind losing the account but holding the messages for payment is somewhat sleazy; however, there isn't much of a loss there because their spam filter was not very effective and the messages would be largely junk mail.

Honestly, Hotmail is very bad, I think most everyone will agree to that. It is junk mail bait. A good alternative is at http://www.myrealbox.com
but there are several others, yahoo I hear is pretty good, or try your IPS's mail etc.

I gotta go with BuckDeath on this one. I switched from Hotmail to MyRealBox a few months ago and haven't looked back since. There's even POP client access if you don't want to use the web interface.

First, for the main question. In Outlook Express, just ADD MAIL ACCOUNT. In the What is the ADDRESS box, just put username@hotmail.com. Outlook Express will take care of the rest.

Personally, I like Hotmail. I've been using it as my permanent address for over three years. I like the In Box Protector. I set the filter to EXCLUSIVE. All e-mail whose sender is not in my address book at the Hotmail site is automatically devlivered to a separate folder. But unlike other online e-mail services, it gets downloaded to my computer that way, also.

I just quickly scan the junk mail. Ocassionally, I have one I want to keep. I COPY (not move) it to a local folder. Delete everything else. End of story.

The service is good enough that I would actually pay for it. But I don't.
