Is Cisco chatting up Skype?
31st August 2010 - 12:20 - by Arie
Cisco Systems may be making a play for Internet phone service Skype, according to a TechCrunch report.

The blog cited an unnamed source who claims that Cisco has made an offer to acquire Skype before the company completes its initial public offering. Skype filed for an IPO with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this month.

TechCrunch admited that it wasn't able to confirm the rumor, which might indicate that its source is not directly related to the talks.

AMD set to ditch ATI in brand cull
31st August 2010 - 12:15 - by Arie
Chip giant aims to simplify the buying experience

AMD has announced plans for a fundamental overhaul of some of its key brands over the coming year, with ATI and other brands set to be dropped and replaced by Vision, Radeon and Firepro.

Executives at the chip giant said they expect the demise of ATI as a brand to begin in the fourth quarter of this year and end by September 2011.

AMD will continue to use the ATI logo in 2011 for existing products. New graphics cards will immediately take on the AMD Radeon and AMD Firepro logos but even the reference to AMD is expected to be dropped in due course with cards simply being branded 'Radeon' or 'Firepro'.

Windows 7 SP1 beta released to the general public
27th August 2010 - 13:21 - by Arie
After making them available to TechNet subscribers last month, Microsoft has released betas of Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 to the general public.

This is the same version of the update that was previously released, so don't expect any new features or fixes. In fact, users of the company's consumer OS who have been keeping up with the monthly security updates won't see any notable changes at all. Windows 7 SP1 is largely a collection of fixes and updates previously made available through Windows Update.

Analyst: Samsung likely to pass Intel in ICs
27th August 2010 - 13:17 - by Arie
Based on its broad semiconductor product offerings and expansion plans, South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is on track to catch Intel Corp. in semiconductor revenue and will most likely become the No. 1 chip vendor by the middle of this decade, according to a prominent semiconductor industry analyst.

Market research firm IC Insights Inc. acknowledged that the idea of Samsung catching Intel might have seemed preposterous five to 10 years ago, but said Samsung's IC revenues have grown at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.5 percent from 1999 through 2009, while Intel's CAGR has slowed to 3.4 percent over the same period. Extrapolating these growth rates, Samsung would pass Intel in semiconductor sales in 2014, according to IC Insights.

Windows 95 Marks 15th Anniversary
27th August 2010 - 13:13 - by Arie
Windows 95 marks its 15-year anniversary this week.

Reading through the online reminiscences, I realized I'd forgotten the sheer size of Microsoft's marketing blitz behind the operating system: the Empire State Building lit up in company's colors, the gazillion dollars reportedly shelled out for the Stones' "Start Me Up," and even a "cyber sitcom" starring Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry.

Originally code-named Chicago, Windows 95 introduced the Start menu, taskbar, and limited multimedia support. Its system requirements seem quaint in retrospect: PC with 386DX or higher processor (486 recommended), 4MB of memory, one 3.5-inch high-density floppy disk drive, VGA or higher screen resolution.

Adobe Updates Reader, Acrobat and Flash Player
23rd August 2010 - 16:21 - by Arie
Adobe Reader and Acrobat have received emergency patches to fix vulnerabilities disclosed at the Black Hat conference.

Charlie Miller said at Black Hat that the flaws in Adobe Reader and Acrobat could be exploited with specially crafted PDF files. The Adobe updates also fix six vulnerabilities in Flash Player that could be used to take control of a PC.

Adobe Systems has issued emergency updates for its Reader and Acrobat products to address a critical flaw disclosed at the Black Hat conference in July. The updates take Reader to version 9.3.4 and Acrobat to version 8.2.4

Toshiba spins 2.5-Tbit hard disk
20th August 2010 - 11:19 - by Arie
Toshiba Corp. has successfully flown a recording head over a track on a disk that packs 2.5 terabits of data per square inch, five times the density of today's hard disks.

The report gives a boost to backers of bit patterned media, a technique for tightly arranging data locations on a disk seen by some as the next big leap in denser hard drives. But drive makers are still far from agreement about the road map for rotating media.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer Turns 15
20th August 2010 - 11:13 - by Arie
Microsoft's Internet Explorer turns 15 years old this week.

It's hard to think of a software application that's found itself at the center of more sector-changing drama: in addition to the seemingly never-ending browser wars, remember (how could we forget?) that the bundling of Internet Explorer with Windows was the fulcrum for the landmark United States v. Microsoft antitrust case.

Given its outsized position in peoples' Web lives--despite strong challenges from Firefox and Google Chrome, IE retains a lion's share of the browser market--it's easy to forget the browser's tiny stature upon its release in August 1995.
