To be honest with you if you connect the laptop to an external monitor and the display is perfect it would indicate to me that either the cable, cable socket on the board, or the LCD panel is at fault.
The cables and LCD's are extremely delicate and if whoever took the laptop apart did not take care over it then they could well be damaged.
I would not expect plugging the wrong power supply into would cause a problem like that, normally the main fuse inside the laptop would blow first, but anything is possible.
I would first look into swapping the cable out as this is probably your cheapest option.
