Exclamation Need help adding a hard drive!

We just purchased a used Dell Precision 530 which we plan to use as the server in a small business network. We have the EIDE drive from the previous server, which contains the main company software (a DOS program) that is essential for business operations. I assumed I could install the old hard drive into the Dell as a slave and be able to access the program. I set the jumper on the old hard drive according to the example on the drive, used the original cables to connect it to the IDE I slot, but when I boot it doesn't find the drive. I have toyed with the BIOS settings, and followed the instruction manual directions for recognizing the EIDE drive... but still no luck. I am far from an expert (obviously)... and I am hoping someone here can give me the right steps I need to follow to get this drive operational ASAP.

Thanks!

My System

shenanagins,

I recently had troubles adding a slave drive to my Dell. Here is the solution that fixed it, found on this post. Go into BIOS then:

"Under IDE Configuration on the "working" system, the IDE Primary Slave was listed as None. I checked the problem system and it was set to Auto. I changed to None and have had no problems with the start up yet."

I hope that helps.

Mike, thanks for your response! Glad to see you got yours up and running smoothly. I'm wondering if it would matter if the master drive is SCSI, and the slave drive is IDE? I didn't change any jumpers on the primary drive either, only the slave. I have to hit it again early in the morning, so trying to get my ducks in a row tonight if possible. Thanks again!

If the IDE is the Only drive on the IDE channel - set the jumper to either CS or Master.

I wouldn't think it would matter, but I've only used IDE drives. So, I'll leave that combination to others who have more knowledge on that.
