Question about new laptops-Firewire

Hi I have just entered the " replace laptop " stage of our life cycle And with my budget the prospects should look pretty good only thing I am now finding that a lot of new laptops don't seem to include Firewire or have the old pcmcia slot to enable you to do this yourself.
I only noticed this by chance.
is this the way the industry is moving now?

Is there some other way to load dv into laptops in order the edit ??.
one not including add on boxes in order to convert

or is Usb the new standerd interface for camcorders etc?

Although not specific to your subject of Firewire, keep in mind most new laptops don't come with dial up modems - should you think you would ever need it. I just bought a new Dell and I neglected to check that particular item and ended up spending $50 to get a USB modem that is sub-par, but workable.

New laptops don't have pcmcia slots, but may have a combo pcmcia-pcmcia express slot, or just a pcmcia express slot. You can get an express firewire adapter:

There are also firewire to usb adapters.
