Maybe a more specific question will help.
Not asking about habits, and I'm not an electrical engineer so I don't know.

    It should.

Even if it doesn't it helps saves the planet.

With CRT's it depends, heating and cooling could be worse than continuous use.

With LCD's although the temprature issue is still there it is very much diminished.

With CRT's powerdown if you're not using the monitor for anymore than 20 minutes, with LCD's then no usage for 5 mins is worth turning it off.

That's my opinion anyway and as rsinfo said you'll contribute to saving the planet.

It was explained to me like this:
LCD is like a light bulb. The more you turn it on and off the shorter the life.
That said, I'm not into wasting resources, and I want to balance this w/ common sense relative to the life of my LCD.

    Oh, and Wildfire,
    I did hear that somewhere.
    What you ask?
That's it's always better to burn out than to fade away.
I think the guy's name was Neil? ;)

    Maybe the question should be,
What's the balance between turning the thing on/off and it's lifespan?

    It's a quote from Highlander

As far as leaving on/switching off I don't think lifespan is really an issue nowadays. By the time your monitor failed chances are you'll have upgraded to a new one.

Some would say that turing on Anything heats it up and makes the parts expand....Turning it off cools the parts and makes then shrink back....And that it's the expanding/shrinking of the parts is what wears them out.

But parts were designed to do it this......Only way to know for sure - get a second monitor and treat each one differently. Report back in 5 to 10 YEARS and let us know how it goes;)

Think Green and turn it off;)

It's also from a Neil Young tune.
Never saw Highlander, though heard it was good.

Since I'm not that determined, and just a bit lazy in this area, I'll just turn the thing off, though I will say I do like your thinking Steve! :)

Yep, but I was never a fan of Punk

The films not bad though but I was always suprised, given the title that the only Scot was cast as an egyptian :D

Anyway, way off topic now. If you want to chat MSN or PM me.

    Neil's not punk.
Is there a rule about hijacking threads?

    My bad :D

Anyway as I said I lifted the quote from the film not the song ;)

Music was never my forte and apart from a little UB40, Queen or Dire Straits I have little interest in the subject ;)

Now can we get back on topic, this red LED on my monitor if I completely power it down so the things off will I really save the planet ;)

    I'll take this as a "no ".
Though from the looks of this thread there should be a double posting rule.
Not sure how that one occurred.
Seems to be a problem w/ the "quick post" option. Sometimes it goes into hyperspace and doesn't return. The pg just keeps trying to load.

And for the record, Neil is definitely rock and definitely my style.
