desktop will not boot up

running windows xp on a desktop i bought at a computer show about 4 years ago.....3 stays ago this crazy machine stopped working properly...when i turn it on i hear the post chirp, then i get this start up window that shows the type of board, processor and all that good stuff, then i get a black and white window that says as follow:"We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware of software change might have cause this." then at the bottom i have a couple of choices:
start windows in safe mode
start windows in safe mode with networking
last known good configuration
and start windows normally
no matter which one i pick it just starts the process over, like a never ending cycle...i havent changed or downloaded anything that i think would stir this thing up...anybody have any ideas????

If you cannot boot into normal or safe mode, you will need to boot to the Windows CD. That may require that you adjust the boot order in the BIOS/startup settings (to boot to the CD/DVD drive before the HDD).

At the first screen, you can choose to run the Recovery Console, it will leave you at a command prompt, you can try entering
chkdsk C: /r
it may take a few hours to run.

There are not many other options that I know of. The next step would be to boot the Win CD and after you agree to the Eula, there is an option to repair the Windows installation, run that.
