DVD drive opens and then closes before I can put a disk in it.

Lite On 16X DVD Dual has a mind of it's own. When I press the open button, the DVD holder comes out and then closes immediatly. Sometimes it takes 4 or 5 tries before it will stay open, somes up to a dozen. It almost seems that it thinks I have put a disk in and it closes.

I have Nero 7.10.1.2 if that information is useful. Where do I start to troubleshoot this issue?

I wasn't sure if this is a software issue or a hardware issue.

There is an electronic switch that controls the drawer...They go bad....

Are you pressing the button on the drive or select EJECT from Nero or My Computer? If you have tried the EJECT button, give it a shot. (right click on the drive in my computer and select eject)

    Hi Steve,

I just tried the R-click on the drive in My Computer and eject and it does the same thing. It pops out and then goes right back in. Is the electronic switch the problem then? Is it difficult to get it fixed, or is that not possible?

Only a guess, but look in Add or Remove Programs for (Ahead) InCD, try uninstalling it.

You could try going to the LiteOn website, look for a Firmware Update for your model. The model number should be listed in Device Manager.

If it is still under warranty it would be worth returning it, if not, the prices are so low that it would not be worthwhile trying to get repairs made on it.

Hi Matt. I uninstalled InCD a long time ago. It gave me so much grief.
I went to the website and looked for updated firmware. They have an update for both of my LiteOn drives (from2006). The date is more recent than the last time I installed updates. The number (in the downloaded file) looks the same. Do you think I should install them? Won't hurt if it's already the ones I have?

If it is the same or a more recent version, that is no problem. Read the instructions carefully. It may not fix the problem, but it won't hurt to run an update.

If you have more than one drive and they both connected on the same IDE (data) cable, I would reverse the jumper settings on each (master -> slave and slave-> master). Again, that is just something I would try.

It's usually very simple. The most important thing is to be certain of the model number.

Thanks Matt. I'll give it a try when I have some time at home.

Anything is almost possible,,,,but if it worked for a few years, I'm not so sure upgrading the firmware will fix this...

Pulling it out of the pc and blowing the dust would be worth trying.

My hardware knowledge goes as far as opening the cover to the PC blowing the dust bunnies out of it and changing RAM.

I'll try updating the driver, and if I can figure out how to get the drive out, I'll blow the dust off it. I guess I can't open the draw and spray in there. It would probably close when I shut the power off.
