Suddenly, for no apparent reason I can read DVDs/CDs from my drive but can't write to them. The drive appears as normal on explorer but loading a blank disc gets and 'unable to read' message. I have recently had to reload my ADSL software a number of times, is this likely to corrupt the DVD driver software, is the drive past saving or can anyone suggest any other solution.

    TIA

There's a good chance that the drive has failed. However before you throw it out check the cabling to it - unplug the ribbon cable and plug it in again (assuming a desktop here) and remove the drive in Device Manager and reboot.

There should be no interaction between your ADSL software and the Windows drivers for the drive.

You might also check that recording is enabled on the drive, that is if you are using the native burning software in XP or is it Vista?

In XP - may be the same in Vista, right click on the drive in Windows Explorer or My Computer > Properties > Recording tab - enable recording on this drive should be checked.

If you are using third party burning software this check box would normally be unchecked.

If the possibility exists try the drive in another computer.

Can read butr not write to DVD

Hello Pete. Your information was,as always, perfectly correct and I have now managed to record the files I needed to a CD however, I checked properties of the drive found that recording was disabled so I enabled it and everything worked OK. On trying to copy again some mnutes later,I had the same problem and the recodring had become disabled again - Is there any way that I can make 'Enabled' the default setting?

    TIA

Glad to hear that the simple fix worked :) As to why the check box will not stay checked I don't know and can find no reference to this problem anywhere ....

Have you any third party burning software on the computer - Nero, Roxio .... ?

Have you more than one burner installed ?

I suggest you run System File Checker if you have a retail XP CD - not a Recovery CD ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow > (note the space) > Enter. You may be asked for your XP CD which should contain the same Service Pack as that installed on the computer.
