E-machine T2865 shuts down randomly

Hi, I'm trying to help my brother, who uses a 3 year old (or so) e-machine desktop, with what appears to be a power supply problem. According to him, it will just randomly shut down after several minutes of use. It is fully dead when this occurs (no LED, and silent). It usually cannot be restarted right away (push the button, nothing happens). He let's it 'cool off' for an hour and then it will restart. He has anti-virus software that is (supposedly) kept up to date so I don't think it's a virus. My question is, are power supplies pretty generic as far as what they will fit? Comp USA has several to choose from but I'd like to be reasonably sure it will fit his e-machine.
