I've been having trouble connecting to the internet and running a test it said modem not detected. How do I find what kind of modem I have? Does that mean I need a new modem? I have an older computer that crashed. Can I take the modem out of that computer and install in the one that won't detect? How do I do that?

You will need to confirm information about your system. I take it that it is a dialup modem (not ADSL/Broadband)? You are running Windows XP?
You don't have any information about the modem that is currently installed (sounds not ), any information about the computer...manuals, model numbers? If it is a branded computer like a Dell, Hewlett Packard, Compaq, Sony, Gateway, etc, you can go to their website and find how to identify your model. It should tell you what sort of modem you have in the specifications (but you will most likely need their installation or driver disks).
Look in Control Panel -> (Phone and) Modems. Are there any listings or does a setup wizard run?
You can run try running the Add Hardware wizard and see if it can detect the modem.
Look at Start -> Help (and Support), search for "modems", "installing", that will give you some steps, but you will most likely need to have the drivers for any modem that you want to install available (and that means identifying the model and finding drivers).
Basically, it could be a "piece of cake" or it could be "impossible", it pretty much depends on if you can find the drivers.
If you have the disks that came with the computer originally, look for modem installation programs on those.
