thomson speedtouch adsl modem

Hopefully this is the right area for this. If not would you please leave a pointer for my return.

Been helping a friend set up there broadband - unsuccesfully.

The other day she installed the software and the modem but when she clicked the icon it gave the message password and username not known in this domain. Sher did this without any assistance.

I told her she would have the username wrong as often they add @adsl to the username. I told her to check out the password with the isp which is virgin.net and put it in correctly.

She then asked someone else to help who went round and had a play with the machine. Uninstalling and reinstalling the software and clicking many other boxes besides. But with no success. She never bothered to check out the new password.

Yesterday I went round, uninstalled the software. Did system restore back to last week, reinstalled the software, plugged in the modem ( thompson se330 speedtouch). Clicked the icon and got the message NO DIAL TONE.

I find it strange that earlier in the week it was getting as far as saying the username was wrong whereas now its only saying No dial tone. Is there something that the person who went round before me could have clicked in the sytem settings to stop this thing dialing up ? or is it just coincidence and there could be a line fault ?

Anyone with any ideas please let me know - cheers Glenn

I have used a Speedtouch 330 for years, first with BT, now - with another Speedtouch 330 with TalkTalk.

When you get the No Dial Tone message are both the green leds on and steady? It does take some time to connect.

If both lights are on then it's time to speak with the ISP. I'm not sure if a dial tone on the phone is good enough evidence that there is not a problem with the line.

That suggests to me that the connection has not been made - the RH light on my modem is labelled ADSL and until it stops flashing on booting up or plugging the modem in - I use it on more than one computer - if I try to connect the message I receive is No Dial Tone. Once the light is steady the connection is made.

You might try your modem on the setup.
