Unknown device

    I purchased a bare bones computer and put it together last weekend and I am having trouble finding out what this "unknown device" is.
    I purchased The following:
    CASE, Ultra Aluminus Mid Tower ATX Case Silver
    MB, Intel D945GPMLKR Socket 775 Motherboard
    PROCESSOR, Intel Pentium D 840 3.2gGHz DT 800FSB Socket 775
    RAM, (2) Ultra 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz
    HD, Seagate 320GB Serial ATA HD 7200/16MB/SATA-3G
    FLOPPY, Ultra 3.5 Floppy Drive with All-In-One Reader
    DVD, LiteOn 16xDVD Burner
    POWER SUPPLY, Ultra 500w V-Series PSU Black
    FANS, Masscool 8W0141B Socket 775 CPU Cooling Fan 3.6GHz, (2) Ultra 120mm Ball Bearing Fan Titanium
    OS, Microsoft Windows XP Pro Edition OEM Version W/SP2

    I sure did, I loaded all the drivers that came with everything. The only thing I can think of is something is connected wrong. I am checking now.

    OLDSALTY--Does everything work on your PC including all peripherals?
    If no, you have found the "unknown device ". Uninstall it. Reboot and, if necessary, reinstall it.
    If yes, in Device Manager, right click on the "unknown device "|Properties. Do the tabs give you any information on what the unknown device is? If not, uninstall the unknown device and see what happens the next time you reboot.

    I see you have an All-In-One reader. These usually require a usb connection to the mb. If you do not see several card reader drive icons in My Computer then this may be your unknown device.

    I d/l'd this and ran it. I can't say it helped any as there was no unknown device listed. I guess I don't know how to use the software.

    OLDSALTY--On your Detail thumbnail you can see that you have shown only one of the several ID's possible. Try the dropdown list to look at Hardware ID.

    I pasted the entire exchange.

    Rather tedious and appears to be a dead end. The format is horrible :rolleyes: I had trouble in following who was answering whom.

    I think I finally found the culprit. I have a serial label printer and I plugged it in as I had on my old computer. But I did not plug in the power to the unit. So as soon as I find the power supply I will plug it in and load the drivers and see what happens. To be continued.

    From what I've read whhe googling for AWY0001, the unknown device has to do with a new feature on Intel motherboards called Intel Quick Resume Technology. There should be a setting in the bios to enable or disable the feature & it is likely set to enabled in your bios. The issue stems from the fact that the driver for this feature is not included on the mb cd & you must download the driver & install it in order to use the feature & have the device recognized by the operating system.
