I am having a problem with my computer "going to sleep" after the screen saver has been on. If I want to leave the computer on for a period of time & then come back to use it and it is in "sleep" mode the monitor will not come back on!
I have had to press the reset button to start it up again.
What can I do to stop this happening....Please!!
I am running Windows 98 (if this is any help)
Hoping to find an answer to this annoying fault.
Thanks

Been through that "battle" before .
Some suggestions (try some, although they may only work all together)
When you come back to wake it up, hit the Ctrl key.
Disable the Screen Saver (set it to blank screen).
Go to Power Management in Control Panel. I have set mine to Standby: "Always On"; Turn off monitor: "After 15 mins"; Turn off harddrives: "After 1 hour".
Do not have the Screen Saver set to come on at the same times as Power Management settings.
Don't use "View desktop as a webpage" (if you do, let me know, we might be able to find a different way of running your desktop). If you are not sure whether it is enabled, see if it checked under Start > Settings > Active Desktop.
Thanks for the advice Matt.....I have already turned off the screen saver.
I found that it seems to be okay now but will also change my Power Management settings that you suggested.
Thanks again. Leopardlady
If you are interested.
I am not sure if it is Windows screen saver you are having problems with, or a third party (non-Windows) screen saver. Anyway, see if changing the power management settings will allow it to run correctly.
After I had my problems, I checked out third-party screen savers. I tried this one: http://www.anfyteam.com/ajdownl.html
It works quite well. It does not run at startup (in the background). Does not hijack your internet connection, add spy/sales ware, nag screens, etc. Can be removed in Add/remove programs. You do not have to pay for anything unless you wish to use it as a feature on a personal website.
I have more interest in setting wallpapers. There are no problems with "sleeping" by setting wallpapers. With wallpapers, you need to change picture files from .jpg, .gif, etc, files into bitmap (.bmp) files, otherwise "view desktop as a webpage" is automatically enabled and causes problems (it is something that does not work properly in Win 98). Trouble is that .bmp files are a lot larger in size that other picture formats, so if you have a big, detailed image, it will chew up graphics resources.
If you do a Find files for "bmp", you will see the wallpapers that Windows uses in the C:Windows folder. If you save your image as a .bmp in that folder, it will come up in the list of wallpapers to choose from in Display settings.
I think it is fun
