Hi,
After installing XP Pro onto my PC a few years old, no USB2 only 1.1. I had a USB2 PCI card installed.
My problem is the scanner that I use Canon 8000F USB2 will not work with Via USB2 drivers only NEC drivers. My USB 2 PCI card has both on the driver CD and when installed somehow the Via drivers installed themselves too.
If I plug my scanner into the USB 2 connectors I get one scan and then the scanner dumps its Twain drivers and I end up installing the scanner drivers again. All works well on USB 1.1 just too slow.
How can I uninstall the USB drivers to try and install the NEC drivers only.
Or should I just buy a new USB 2 card that only has NEC drivers and install it.
I know it can be installed so it works flawlessly it had been done before, trouble is the techie can not remember how.
USB Universal Serial Bus controllers
Generic USB Hub
NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller (B1)
NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller
NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
This is the USB Stack in Device Manager.
When I connect USB 2 devices Windows always will advice me that this device can operate faster by connecting it to the USB 2 connectors from the PCI card. But when connecting there is problems.
My original USB 1.1 connectors on the front work fine.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A few points here ....
Your listing from Device Manager does not show a Via Enhanced Host Controller (USB2) so the VIA USB 2 drivers are not in fact loaded - compare your Device Manager listing with mine - Asus A8V Deluxe with Via chipset, USB 2 and a Belkin 5 port PCI USB 2 card also installed - see jpg below. The Via USB Enhanced Host Controller (at the bottom of the stack) is for USB 2 and is not on your listing.
I suspect that your motherboard has a Via chipset, in which case your scanner is happily running on Via controlled USB 1.1 ports.
If you are running SP1 or later you do not need to load any drivers from the driver CD. XP will detect the card and load the appropriate drivers when booted up. The drivers you installed from the driver CD may appear in Add/Remove Programs under the card manufacturer's name.
I suspect your problem lies elsewhere - check out these points and post back.
hi Pete,
and thanks, sorry to be draging my feet, but I have been working late.
So what you are saying is that the 2 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Host Controller belong to the Motherboard as my IWill Mobo has the VIA chip and yes the Canon Scanner is happy to run on USB 1.1 but USB 2 is a different matter.
So it is only the NEC drivers that are installed.
My XP Pro has SP2 installed, but I did have the problems once before SP2.
No the PCI card drivers do not show up in Control Panel Add / Remove.
As I mentioned Windows recognices the card as every time I plug in my USB2
card reader or Jump Drive the little message pops up from the Task Bar informing me that this device can perform faster by connecting it to the USB 2 Ports.
Mind you my external hard drive does not like the USB 2 ports eighter no problem in 1.1. There are no yellow markers in the device manager.
The card is in the same PCI slot it was in when it worked fine. I have made many enquiries regarding this but no results. Must be one of those hard to pin point problems. I had been thinking about installing a new USB 2 PCI Card and try again. But how would I uninstall the present drivers to install the ones of the new card, as they do not show up in Add / Remove.
It would be nice to be able to scann with USB 2 speed

While I try and fathom this out - some more info please ....
Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers > right click on NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller > Properties > Driver. Who is the driver supplier - see below for my driver details.

hi Pete,
no the message only comes up on the USB 1.1 plugs
I had a look on the drivers and there is a slight difference
youre MS 5.1 2600.2180
mine MS 5.1 2600.0
does this mean That I don't have the latest MS drivers??
I am fairly shure that I have the latest Canon drivers but I will download them as well.
well you found something Pete where to from here

no it is a internal one using one of the 5 1/2 " bays pluged into the internal USB 2
That's the same as an external hub - just happens to be installed in the box It is probably USB 1 and will only work as such.
Let us recap ....
Please list the USB ports you have ....
On the back panel - these will be USB 1
On the PCI card - these will be USB 2 - is the scanner plugged into here?
On the front panel - the hub, guessing USB 1
Try disconnecting the 'internal' hub from the PCI card and try the scanner again.
Are there any headers on the motherboard to which you can plug the 'internal' hub. If you don't know post the make & model number of the mobo and I will take a look at the manual. Use Everest for i/d if you don't know the mobo details.
I'm uploading a web site right now so may not be available for a while.
Hi Pete,
Sorry I could not hang around any longer last night.
Lets recap as you said.
The Mobo is a Iwill KK266-R it has 2 USB Ports and I think looking at the diagram in the Manual 1 USB 1 header. The Hub 4port on the front USB are USB 1 only it is self powered it used to be connected to one of them it is now connected to the internal port of the USB 2 PCI card that has 4 external plus 1 internal port. The Scanner is plugged into the USB port at the back of the mobo Canon do not recommend to connect to Hubs. All my USB ports work fine on 1.1 but for some time the scanner was connected to the USB 2 PCI card and worked just fine till one of my hard drives went south and had to reinstall Windows and a new HD.
I have not uninstalled the card as yet as you were still contemplating but if you think I should then I will try that first. In regards to connecting the front Hub to the header on the board I have tried that and it made no difference I get one scan on USB 2 and then it dumps the Twain drivers and I have to go through the process of reinstalling the Scanner.

I think the next step is to uninstall the card as detailed in post #7
Incidentally has the card been moved from one slot to another since it worked OK? If it is in the PCI slot adjacent to the AGP slot I would move it to another slot.
just a update Pete, installed the latest Canon drivers, uninstalled the 3
NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller as you refered to rebooted the system and Windows reloaded the drivers this time with the same drivers as on your list.
Connected the scanner to the USB 2 ports and tried to make a scan, but as soon as I clicked scan I received the message that the Twain drivers will be shut down. I then used the Canon utility to uninstall the drivers and then reinstalled them and all is well again but only in USB 1.
Back to the Drawing Board I guess.

It reminded me that there can be problems associated with the printer.
Try uninstalling both the printer and the scanner, then reinstall the scanner before the printer. Look in the User Guide for the scanner, I know it is mentioned in some.
