Help with Ominbook

Hi All
A friend has a "OmniBook 600c" This is old I believe?
All he can get to come up is MSDOS. He downloaded this from HP.....

I'm not sure what this is??

I would like to know what commands I would have to use to see if wondows will start on here.
He believes it has Windows 3,1. But I don't know what cmd's i need to put in to see if windows will come up.

Also, He would like to put windows 95 on it. Can you download 95 anywhere for free? and would it fit on a floopy?

I can hardly remember 3.1

, anyway...
If the hardrive is booting to MSDOS you should be at the C:\> command prompt. Type:
win [Enter]

No luck, type:
dir [Enter]
that should list the files/folders on the drive. You should be able to see the WINDOWS folder. If the list is too long type:
dir /p [Enter]
try with and without the space after "dir"

To get it to boot to Win 3.1, I think you need to replace the file Command.com with the Windows version. If noone can help here, ask on the 3.1 forum. If there was a problem with 3.1 it may need to be reinstalled.

Sorry, no free Win95. You may get one cheap on Ebay. If your friend has the necessary details about proving he has Win3.1, you may be able to use a Win 95 "upgrade" version.

The floppy version of Win 95 is several disks. At installation I think I have squeezed it down to about 80-90 megabytes with reasonable functionality. Check the drive space...it should list used/free drive space when you enter DIR, it may not be able to fit Win95 and it's programs (??).

Hi matt
It's not booting to C.
When I turn it on it asks for a system disk. It has a n external floopy and then it starts on A.

It has an "PCMCIA Type 3 ATA Card" 130MB Callunacard.

I don't know if this is the system disc and if it is why it would not be reading it.
It will only run off the floopy and I believe those are drivers or a start up disc??
With out the floopy it says to insert the system disc and push any key.

Can any one help here??

Geri, I had a look around HP.

The PCMCIA card would be a flash card, not the harddrive. Info:

It says the harddrive is "removable", I would check that it has not been dislodged (pull and reseat it).

You could also go to the website of the harddrive manufacturer and see if utilities are available for checking the drive.

PS The download under Win 3.1 is a driver setup utility.

Hi mattman
Well I guess I need windows 3.1 to install.

I can't get it to do anything, Tried all the links you gave not sure where the harddrive is located for there are no pictures that I can find.

Know where I could get windows 3.1 where I could download it and then install it on here?

I'm guessing that everything was wiped before he got it and the file he downloaded was MS DOS version 6.22 and that is all that is on here.

Would MS DOS work without a HD? there is a slot on the right side but it is empty.

Geri, did you do the Fdisk test? If Fdisk does not see the harddrive there is not much point to getting Win 3.1, there will be nowhere to put it.

If the floppy disk you are using does not have Fdisk, get a Win 95 or Win 98 startup disk. If you don't have either of those, you can get boot disks (startup disks) from www.bootdisk.com .

The harddrive could be corrupted. It is also possible that it is broken or maybe even not there at all (the open slot). I would make sure the harddrive is working before taking any other steps.

PS If you are booting to the A: prompt (A:\>) that means you are booting to the floppy disk. If you were booting to the harddrive you would be at the C: prompt (C:\>).
By the way, you change drives by entering the drive letter and a colon, eg. if you are at the A: prompt type:
C: [enter]
If you get to the C: drive, do the commands I put in the first reply.

Hi matt
I did the Fdisk, It says Bad command or file name.

It has a drive B. I typed, cd B:\ and I got, Insert diskette for drive B and press any key when ready. That is the only drive letter that it would do that on all others I would get, "Invalid drive specification".

I believe you are right, I don't think it has the hard drive (empty slot).

I will tell him that he needs to get one, if you even can any more.
