Despite talking to compaq I have been unable to verify the power requirement for this connector on the subject motherboard. Can anyone tell me what it is or direct me to where I can get a manual with the pinouts?

Here is a link to the manual for the Asus A7V8X mothrboard. It may help.
It does not state the -LA after the model number but that tends to just specify a subset of board under the main set of boards designated before the -LA. The manusl may be of use.
The ATX12V connector is required for Pentium 4 and AMD 64bit (and maybe the Sempron) processors. I have also read that it is required when using some of the newer graphics cards.
If you are calculating the power requirements for your system, the extra power will be included in your CPU or graphics power requirements, depending on which types you have.

Note the four pin connector ATX12V on the left of center (not the main 12V power connector). This does not show on the manual you referenced. It is this connector I am trying to verify the voltage for.

Phew!...I am tired of searching around Asus. It is so slow, at least with my connection.
None of the A7V8X models at Asus have an ATX12V connector.
Giving up, I will tell you what my ABIT AMD 64bit board has. The ATX12V connector has four pins. Two are COM, two are +12V.
My manual warns "...to connect an ATX12V power supply with 300W, 20A +5VDC and 720mA +5VSB capacity at least".
Ausus A8V Deluxe manual - the ATX12V connector pins are, reading from the mobo edge (North edge as per the photo you posted) clockwise -
GND GND
+12V DC +12VDC
Volts 12, clearly, but amps?? The plug fits in only one orientation.
Would be interesting to know why you want this info. Any power supply with a plug for that socket should supply the correct power. Assuming that your power supply has that connector is there any info on the PSU?
Roger that on the ASUS website "slow to no". The story on the question is thus; I am rebuilding a computer for a friends son. The PS in that puter, a Bestec 250 watt went bad. I am having to replace it with a different 250 watt from another puter. The new PS does not have the ATX12V 4 pin connector so am having to redo some wiring and wanted to know what it was supposed to be. I am somewhat concerned because of what you said above about the 300 watt warning that the original Bestec in the Compaq may have been underpowered. I may wind up doing this again in the future with a 300 watt PS, but my friend does not have the money for that right now. Thanks so very much for the info. You guys are truly great.
