my friend has a fujitsu siemens e series lifebook laptop, which is running ms windows xp pro. it has interchangeable drives, that slot in at the side. he has a floppy drive that can be slotted in, or a cd-rom drive which is marked as a teac cd-224e. recently he has moved the laptop, and it stopped working. on closer inspection, in device manager, the cd-rom drive model and make is recognised, but the device status box shows this message:

'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.'

the troubleshooter has not thrown up any answers, and from what i can gather, the driver is rather generic and should have been included with xp, as i can only find dos/9x drivers.

there is also another unrecognised device in device manager which isnt normally there, which is a bit strange, but may well be nothing to do with the problem.

please can someone help? he is on the verge of buying a new cd drive, which is frustrating as im sure this one works!
    thanks in advance.

    Hi mattbailey,

I found information at the Experts Exchange forum http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win2000/Q_20307479.html

It points to the microsoft solution for code 39 here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060

You could also try the Nero utility they mention: ftp://ftp6.nero.com/RegistryChecker.exe

From my experience, I would say that your friend has tried to install the Media Player burning utility. When I tried this on my machine the optical drives no longer functioned (there was a clash between the MP burner utility and Nero). The problem in your case would be that the drive is not a burner. I solved it by uninstalling Media Player and reinstalling without the burner utility.

    Matt
