Hi, I have just discovered that my Ricoh CD-R/RW Burner won’t work.
Windows XP Pro can see the device it is listed in the Device Manager and listed on the boot up screen but it is disabled with a red X. Also there is a Device listed under it that is enabled and that is:
VOBID Instant Drive CD SCSI CdRom Device but I don’t have any such thing in my PC no SCSI installed.
When I delete the VOBID Instant Drive entry and try to enable my Ricoh CD-R/RW I get the message that Windows is not able to enable the Device:
“The device is disabled (code 22) Also the Letter for the Device has changed it used to be H now it is J. After rebooting VOBID will come back as enabled.
When inserting a CD the light on the unit lights up but when I click on it in Explorer it will ask for a CD.
Any idea on how to change that back
    Thanks

Sounds like you may have Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD installed or something very similar - see here

    Hi Pete,
Thanks and yes that is it, but I have had that program installed for a long time without that virtual drive taking over my burner.
I have found a answer on the Pinnacle Forum on how to get rid of that virtual drive, but I realy would like to get some second opinion on that move as it involves editing the registry and that is something that I have never done before. If you or anyone else for that matter know how to disable that virtual drive and enable my normal optical drive again I would be very grateful.
Here is the one from the Pinnacle Forum:

uninstall the vob drive and vob instantdrive controller (in scsi and raid controllers) in device manager

then click start, run, type regedit, hit the f3 key, type vobid (short for VOB InstantDrive), click find next, delete the key, hit f3 again and again and remove all instances of vobid that you can delete until you done

P.s. it won't let you delete some keys, but when you are done, instantdrive is history

make sure you backup your data before ever messing with the registry

What is your opinion to that.
    thanks

My Burner is working again, deleted all entries of the drive in device manager in safe mode, and on reboot into normal mode windows reinstalled the basic Richo drive.
But I still would like to know about deleting the entries of the virtual drive in the Registry, so it will not happen again.
    thanks

    Hi hawk22

I see no major problems in the solution offered on the Pinnacle website ....
Before you do that be sure to backup up the registry ....

Start > Run > type in Regedit > OK

When Regedit opens scroll to the top if necessary and highlight My Computer

Then go File > Export and in the Export Registry Dialogue box type a name for the backup and select a location - the default of My Documents is fine and be sure that the All button is checked.

Then follow the instructions given above.
