memory card reader

I just installed a smartmedia reader card. It installed flawlessly?. When i insert media card into slot the read light comes on and computer instantly freezes. I have tried removing hardware and software and re-installing. Same results occur.I have noticed in device manager that since the reader can read smart media and xD formats that it installs 2 drive letters H and I . I also noticed that H is installed at location 0 and I is installed at location 1, 1 also being where my USB mouse is installed. Do these location numbers mean anything since all are usb devices. If not what could be problem? Tried Fuji Web site . Not much help there. Printer and scanner are only other USB devices installed on this computer.

Thanks

If you are using Windows 98, I don't think it has the ability to "hot load" a drive. You may need to insert and remove it when the system is shut down.

Even if you using Win 2000 or XP it may be having trouble with this function.

I have not encountered those cards before, so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.
