I'm using the windows xp, but recently a problem of my USB is driving me
crazy. Whenever i plug in my DC or mp3 player, the system can recognize it, and i can still click in to check the files stored on those devices. But about ten seconds later, a dialog will prompt suggesting something like: a invaid reference to your portable drive J...
that's when the usb icon at the bottom right corner of the screen disappears.
Finally, a yellow bubble would prompt saying that "something is wrong when installing the new hardware. the new hardware is not ready for use."
what's wrong with my USB?
i'm crying for help.
thank you.

Suggest you go into the device manager and delete the references to USB. Reboot the PC and let XP reinstall the USB drivers. Make sure all USB peripherals are disconnected first.
I've tried something similar. I click into the device manager, and delete all the references to usb. Then do a detection to the new hardware and have the usb drivers re-installed. But the problem remains. I'm gonna follow your suggestions exactly anyway, hoping for the best.
