I am about to do a clean install of XP. Motherboard specs state "Ram 128 expandable to 256." Maybe an obvious question: Does that mean that 256 is most I can get in this machine?
I use machine for email, surfing, downloading & burning music and experimenting with software (charter memberm, Downloaders Anonymous).

Know now that my system is Sony PCV R549DS. Found manual that also states RAM expandable to 256. Searched all over for info on why only 256 and what would happen if I exceeded that to no avail. Some writing about 1 Gb ram on win98 is closest. May be deciding factor on new machine if limited to 256. Anyone have any experience with exceeding RAM specifiactions?
Probably in your case given the CPU speed and what you use it for, there wouldn't be much advantage in increasing the RAM above 256. I found with an old Celeron 466 that I was trying to fix a lockup problem, that I saw little difference between 128 and 384 MB RAM. Interesting that on this slow machine and using only 128MB, it ran much better with XP SP2 than pre SP2.
Stay with 256 and save your pennies for a future hardware updrade.
